If a child knows that he is set to receive a large inheritance, it may deter him from getting an education or gainful employment. For that reason, I recommend a continuing trust with guidelines as to how and when distributions can be made. Coupled with a Trustee who is stern but flexible, and will make decisions based on your child’s best interest.

A: No! There are court and administrative hurdles involved with storing a will or other estate planning documents in a safe deposit box. Instead, they should be stored with your attorney, in an estate planning portfolio/binder or in a safe deposit box at home. That being said, for individuals who do not have a safe place to store a will or are nervous that there may be tampering after death, a safe deposit box may be the best option. In this case, you may want to name the executor/personal representative or trustee as co-signor on the box.
