The need for blood never stops. If you're eligible, roll up your sleeve and help someone in need.

Don’t forget to register now for our blood drive on Friday August 7th!

There’s currently a national blood shortage, it’s not just a Red Cross issue, blood supplies are low across the country. That means hospitals, emergency rooms, and blood banks are all in need of blood.

Let’s all do our part and give the gift of life to someone!

It’s always a great time at Mount Zion’s annual back-to-school event in the Northern Heights neighborhood. For the last few years, my law firm has been proud to sponsor the haircuts because sometimes a fresh cut can give a young person that extra boost of confidence to start the school year feeling good.

Also, this year I didn’t get to take a picture with my
sponsorship sign or with one of the young men getting their haircut, but I did come across this picture of my great-nephew on a friend’s page so had to lift it from her page and post it. The funny part is, my great nephew had no idea his very own uncle Los was the one who sponsored that fresh cut he got. 😂

But on a serious note, shout out to Mount Zion and everyone who continues to make this great event happen year after year. It’s always a blessing to play a small part in something that means so much to our kids and community.

It was truly an honor to serve as President of the Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association, and to be the first minority to serve in this role. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated professionals and to contribute to a legal community committed to service, integrity, and justice. This recognition means a great deal, and no matter where life lands me I look forward to continuing the work of making a positive impact.

Yesterday I had the privilege of talking with some incredible young people about what ethics and justice really mean. We talked about how your character matters far more than your job title. To me, justice isn’t just what happens in a courtroom. It’s also about how you treat people when you’re the one with the power. Ethics is doing the right thing, keeping your word and showing integrity even when no one is watching. I left the room inspired, knowing there is so much potential in this next generation.

I can't let today pass without sharing about Mt. Zion's annual Back-to-School event, which took place last Saturday. This year's event was truly special. When the rain began to fall, the event didn’t get canceled. Instead, everyone present rallied together and moved the entire event to the Boys & Girls Club. The BGPD, who were already there, stepped in to help pack up, unload, and even reset their grill. That’s what true community looks like.

I was also proud to have my law firm sponsor the free haircuts this year, and I'm excited to announce we’ll be doing it again on August 11th. As someone who was a child who couldn’t afford haircuts, I understand what it means to get a nice cut. (A big shoutout to BJ Carpenter and his barber friends for generously volunteering their time and skill!)

What really stuck with me, though, was a moment shared with me by Bill Oldham. Bill is one of those people who consistently shows up for the community, and that day was no exception. He told me about a young boy who had seen a bike before the rain started and said, “That’s the one I want.” He didn’t just want any bike; he had his heart set on that specific one. An hour later, after everything was moved indoors and numbers were being called, that same boy’s number was picked. Without hesitation, he ran straight to the bike. The look on his face was pure joy, like Christmas morning. That moment felt like a prayer answered. It was a privilege to witness the joy in his eyes and heart.

Also, a huge shoutout to Johnalma Barnett for pouring so much heart into this event every year, all while balancing her own needs. These events are not just about providing school supplies; they’re about love, dignity, and letting kids know they matter. That young boy's joy? That embodies the meaning of "ohana" family, community, and showing up for one another. I know that no one person can help everyone, but I believe we can all assist at least one person, and that still means everything. No one should be left behind or forgotten.

The Kentucky Bar Association’s Military Law Committee has updated their name so that it expressly states that the committee is for those in uniform and for those who previously served and are now veterans. The KBA Board of Governors officially approved the request at their September meeting and the committee will now be known as the Military and Veterans Law Committee.

In addition to the name change, the committee has formally created an email address so that attorneys and citizens can send questions and comments directly to the committee leadership. Email them now at [email protected].

It was with tremendous honor to have celebrated with our 178 brothers and sisters who became new citizens over the last year. This moment symbolizes not just the diversity of our nation, but the unity that makes our nation so great. What made the new American recognition ceremony even more special for me the last few years is knowing that I had the honor to serve as an attorney for some of the individuals in the last two years who were recognized in Bowling Green's new American ceremony celebration. It has been an honor to have played a modest role in their journey to citizenship. I also recognize that I may be the first Bowling Green City Commissioner to assist our brothers and sisters from other nations in becoming new Americans as their attorney of record in their citizenship process. Congratulations to all, and welcome to our big beautiful diverse American community!

Throughout the years, one of my missions has been to help numerous people and one way I have helped many deserving individuals is by clearing their records, providing them with a chance to embrace a new beginning and move forward from their past mistakes. Witnessing the transformative journeys of those I've aided has been an incredibly heartwarming experience. Some of these individuals were already on the path to personal growth and community involvement, and with their records expunged, fresh opportunities that were previously out of reach became accessible to them.

Still, we firmly believe that more can be done to support those yearning for a clean slate. This is why we fervently advocate for the implementation of the Clean Slate Law. By enacting this legislation, we can grant people a genuine opportunity to make amends for their past actions and surpass the limitations of their history. Offering a second chance not only benefits these individuals but also strengthens our economy by opening up employment avenues and filling vacant job positions. With the Clean Slate Law, we can truly empower individuals to right their old wrongs and embrace a brighter, more promising future. 🙏
