Freedom Fighters

📣 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥 𝗜𝗡 𝗡𝗨𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥𝗦

We're excited to share just some of our accomplishments from 2025! Last year at the Exoneree Network, we:

• supported 48 exonerees and others who've been released from long-term incarceration–their average age is 58, and 83% are people of color. Together, they lost 1,344 years to their wrongful incarcerations.
• assisted 19 family members and loved ones who serve as a vital support system for our members. They attended 16 events.
• provided our members with $83,000 in financial assistance to help them rebuild their lives in freedom.
• held 29 programs and events, including tech trainings, quarterly get togethers and our second annual healing retreat.

Other highlights include attending The Innocence Network conference in Seattle in April, enjoying the Celebration of Freedom & Community with friends and family in June, and being named a Nonprofit Excellence Award finalist in the “Community Building" category by the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network!

ANOTHER WRONGFULLY CONVICTED CLIENT FREED

Commonwealth vs. Julio Baez

Today, July 23, 2024, the SJC agreed with the arguments of Attorney Rosemary Scapicchio and Attorney Jillise McDonough and reversed Julio Baez’ first degree murder conviction and ordered that the Superior Court enter findings of not guilty on the charges of murder, armed assault to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon with serious bodily harm. We are thrilled that Julio will be reunited with his family after spending 10 years in jail for a crime he did not commit.

Today is the 10th annual International , a day to raise awareness about wrongful convictions; the harm they cause to individuals, families, and communities; and how we can stand together to fight against them with one voice. We need you with us!

We'll be on the Massachusetts State House steps at 10 a.m. this morning, where exonerees will hold a press conference to ask everyone to call your MA legislators and tell them you support bills S.1011, H.1752, and H.1820 related to compensation for the victims of wrongful conviction.

Finally, stay tuned today for our 1 p.m. press conference for some exciting news that we will be sharing via livestream here on our page. We will be speaking publicly about one of our cases and we’d love to see your support and encouragement on social media for someone who has been waiting far too long for his freedom!
