With the 2023 Rugby World Cup currently in play, OGC Michael Mendelson reflects on the sport and its similarities to the practice of law:
"Rugby is one of the greatest sports anyone can play. It will test your endurance, resolve, strength, commitment, endurance, and most of all mental toughness and resilience--much like the practice of law.
Rugby is a team effort. Each player must do their part, and at the same time, understand how their part contributes to the success of the whole. The sum is truly greater than a combination of its individual parts.
Whether on the pitch (field) or in your legal practice, there is value in
· Doing your job to the best of your ability, and then striving to do it better.
· Understanding your role and how it fits within a larger context.
· Understanding the role of other team members – such as finance, sales, operations, engineering, etc. - and respecting the value each one brings.
· Maintaining open and clear communication to help drive successful outcomes.
· Looking past a setback - shrug it off, learn from it, and keep moving forward.
· Checking your ego at the door. If the other side has an ego, it’s their problem, not yours."
