Congratulations to RIW attorney Adam Barnosky on his nomination to the Massachusetts Restaurants United Board of Directors! 🎉

The board plays an important role in shaping a mission that began in 2020, when MRU emerged as the voice for independent restaurants during COVID. As the Massachusetts affiliate of the Independent Restaurant Coalition, MRU continues to elevate local concerns to the national stage, working alongside the Congressional delegation to push for meaningful federal support.

As the chair of RIW’s Restaurant and Hospitality Practice Group, Adam is already closely involved with the restaurant community and looks forward to supporting the growth and resilience of Massachusetts' independent restaurants in this new role. RIW President Bradley Croft has been ranked by Chambers and Partners USA as a top construction attorney in Massachusetts for the fourth year in a row 🎉

Chambers rankings are among the most prestigious in the legal industry, spotlighting top lawyers and law firms through rigorous research and direct feedback from clients and peers. Rankings are based on criteria including quality of legal work, professional conduct, diligence, and client service, making a Chambers designation the gold standard in legal recognition.

In his construction practice, Brad represents owners, general contractors, and subcontractors in all aspects of construction disputes and transactions. Brad has handled several high-profile construction disputes, including the landmark 2022 case Tocci Building Corp. v. IRIV Partners, in which his client won a $7 million judgment under the Massachusetts Prompt Payment Act, the first time that statute was successfully litigated.

Congratulations to Brad and all those recognized on this year's list!

Overcoming deal challenges is one thing, but anticipating them before they surface can make all the difference. In a recent episode of Transaction Talk, Steven Hanson MBA CBI CBB returns for part two of his conversation with hosts Eric Sigman and Jennifer Fox, CBI to explore what can happen when due diligence is complete, yet a deal continues to drag on.

Key takeaways from this episode include:
✅ How brokers help manage concessions and keep deals on track
✅ When it makes sense to extend (or not extend) a lease
✅ How landlord–tenant issues can derail a transaction and how to resolve them
✅ What changes when a deal shifts from an asset sale to a stock sale
✅ The contractual and tax implications of changing transaction structure
✅ Why knowing when and how to say no can protect deal integrity

The City of Boston has officially adopted new regulations opening the door for certain beer and wine license holders to upgrade to all-alcohol licenses.

On January 8, the Boston Licensing Board established the framework for how these upgrades will work, covering everything from the application process and community review to transferability, public need, and what happens if an upgraded license is later downgraded or no longer in use.

With these rules now in effect, eligible restaurants and hospitality businesses have a clear, immediate path to expand their beverage programs while preserving Boston’s longstanding regulatory structure.

As we head into 2026, one thing is clear: AI is no longer a future-of-work issue, it’s a present-day one. In the latest edition of ChatAdamG, RIW's Adam Gutbezahl looks at how quickly AI is reshaping the workforce, and the legal questions following close behind. 🤖

From new data showing how frequently teenagers are already using AI chatbots, to litigation over AI notetakers in virtual meetings, to the growing gap between how workplaces and universities approach AI adoption, there’s a lot for employers to be thinking about. And as always, the joke and song of the month!
