We shared a little more about why this one means so much to us on the blog.

Claim Status, Translated: Adverse Benefit Determination
This is the formal term for a decision that goes against the person asking for benefits.

In life insurance and ERISA claims, it often means the insurance company has denied the claim, reduced the benefit, or made another negative decision.

Important: an adverse benefit determination does not always mean the case is over. But it may mean there is a deadline to appeal — and that deadline matters.

Life insurance terms can sound final. We translate them.

Claim Status, Translated: **Interpleader**

An interpleader usually means the insurance company is asking a court to decide who should receive the life insurance proceeds.

This often happens when there are competing claims, a beneficiary dispute, or questions about who is legally entitled to the money.

Important: an interpleader does **not** automatically mean the insurance company gets to keep the benefits. It usually means the money is disputed, and the court may need to decide where it goes.

Life insurance terms can sound intimidating. We translate them.

Claim status, translated: Beneficiary Dispute

A beneficiary dispute usually means there is a question about who should receive the life insurance proceeds.

Sometimes more than one person is claiming the benefits. Sometimes there is an issue with a beneficiary change, divorce, missing paperwork, or whether the named beneficiary is legally entitled to the money.

Important: a beneficiary dispute does not automatically mean the insurance company keeps the money, and it does not always mean the listed beneficiary wins.

Life insurance terms can sound final. We translate them.
