Shilo Sanders’ bankruptcy trial began Monday, with multiple witnesses testifying about the 2015 altercation that led to an $11.89 million judgment against him.
One witness testified that Sanders elbowed school security guard John Darjean before punching him twice, while another said Sanders punched Darjean in the face and described the attack as “unprovoked.”
Sanders’ attorneys dispute that version of events, arguing that Darjean used disproportionate force against the then-15-year-old Sanders and that Sanders acted in self-defense.
Darjean received an $11.89 million default judgment against Sanders in 2022. Sanders is now seeking to have that debt discharged through bankruptcy, and the federal judge must determine whether Sanders caused a “willful and malicious” injury.
