Idaho Education Association We are Idaho's public school educators. We support and advocate for all students and educators across the state.

The Idaho Education Association is the professional organization for people who have chosen a career in education. We are a member-driven organization that provides professional support for educators, advocates for public schools and public education, and seeks to help create the best possible learning environment for students and teachers. We recognize that children are our greatest resource, and that good public schools and highly-trained teachers are the most important factor in their future success. We also believe that public education is the backbone of our democracy and a critical ingredient to strong communities. The IEA is actively involved in education on many fronts—advocating on behalf of teachers and students at the capitol, collaborating with other education stakeholders, working with our local associations on bargaining with their districts, providing essential professional development trainings, and raising money for students in need through our Children’s Fund, just to name a few. We welcome input, feedback and support from all who are interested in making Idaho a great place to teach, learn and live. The College of Idaho is hosting the 2026 Idaho Superintendent of Public Instruction Debate:

Incumbent Debbie Critchfield and challenger Becky Sundin Mitchell will debate their visions for Idaho's public schools. The debate will be moderated by Kevin Richert (Idaho Education News), with panelists Dr. Matthew McDaniel (College of Idaho's Master of Education program), Melissa Davlin (Idaho Reports/Idaho Public TV), and Ryan Suppe (Idaho Education News).

This is your chance to hear directly from both candidates on the issues that affect our students, our classrooms, and our communities before you vote in November.

🚨 IDAHO EDUCATORS: If your school district participates in the Idaho School Benefit Trust, pay attention to what your district is doing right now.

Districts and charter schools participating in the Trust have until Sept. 10 to decide how they will cover their share of the Trust's $13 million shortfall. Those decisions could directly affect whether outstanding medical claims for educators and their families are paid.

🤖 Idaho is developing new K-12 standards for artificial intelligence — and educators are helping shape what comes next.

Four IEA members served on the committee that drafted Idaho’s proposed AI standards, bringing educators’ voices directly into conversations about how schools respond to rapidly changing technology.

“It’s people first, AI as a tool, and then how we use that tool ethically, safely, and effectively,” said IEA member and standards committee member Melyssa Ferro.

The standards are still moving through the approval process and educators will have more opportunities to weigh in.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Idaho Education Association President Terry Gilbert.

A longtime educator who remained highly engaged in Idaho’s education community, Terry was a fierce advocate for public education and Idaho students. We extend our deepest condolences to Terry’s family, friends and all who knew and worked alongside him.

📍 NEA President Princess Moss is coming to Idaho!

Shortly after taking office as president of the National Education Association on Sept. 1, Princess Moss will head west — including a stop in North Idaho next week. We’re excited to welcome her and give her a firsthand look at the opportunities and challenges facing Idaho’s public school educators.

As IEA President Peggy Hoy shared:

“I am thrilled President Moss is traveling here to better understand what’s happening on the ground, especially in some of our rural locals. ... President Moss will see that no matter what is happening in the Statehouse, our members will always work to improve their profession and help students succeed.”

A longtime music educator and union leader, Moss brings decades of experience organizing and advocating for public schools to her new role. We can’t wait to welcome her back to the Gem State!
