Billionaires like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have long said that leaving too much money your kids can be a bad thing. This holds true for everyone - you don’t have to be a billionaire to leave your kids a potentially harmful inheritance.

We want our kids to be secure and comfortable, but how much is too much?

To quote Buffett himself: “parents should leave their children enough so they can do anything but not enough that they can do nothing.”

🪦 Oh, Corporate Transparency Act, we hardly knew ye. The US Treasury department recently announced they will not be enforcing the CTA’s reporting requirements for domestic companies .

This law has been on and off again a number of times, so stay tuned for any future plot twists.

RIP, CTA. Gone but probably not yet forgotten.

One thing I wish more people understood is the role first responders play in your health care decisions. Their job description is pretty clear: keep people alive. So how does this work when the patient’s desire is to not be resuscitated?

I had a client a few years ago who was distraught over her mother’s treatment. Mom experienced a medical emergency, the daughter called 911, and paramedics kept mom alive. The daughter was now upset that the paramedics ignored mom’s directive to not be resuscitated and mom was now left living in pain.

The struggle here is to come up with a more empathetic response than “What did you think would happen?”

We don’t want our first responders to be bogged down with reviewing and validating our legal directives. In their line of work, seconds matter. They shouldn’t be checking if the notarization is valid or determining if the directive they were given was later revoked by a newer directive. Imagine the legal nightmare if they allowed someone to die just to find out the directive was outdated and their patient wanted to live.

These situations are sensitive, to be certain. No one wants to watch their loved one struggle. When the goal is to be left to die under natural circumstances, the options for how this plays out must be clearly communicated.
