Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026, which makes this a good time to clear up one of the most common Medicare myths: that Medicare will pay for long-term care in a nursing home. It won't. Medicare covers only limited skilled care, such as rehabilitation after a hospital stay, and only for a short period while you need daily skilled services. It does not cover long-term custodial care, meaning ongoing help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and eating. That is the kind of care most people eventually need, and it can cost thousands of dollars a month. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and one of the simplest rules for staying safe is this: never pay anyone with a gift card. Scammers often pose as someone you trust, such as the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, your bank, a utility company, or even a grandchild in trouble, and they create a sense of urgency so you act before you think. Once you share the numbers on the back of a gift card, the money is gone and almost impossible to recover. No real government agency or business will ever ask you to pay this way. If someone does, hang up, and call the person or organization directly using a number you know is real. Talk with your parents and older loved ones about this, and if you think you've been targeted, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. 860-769-6938
