Today, I spoke with three Huntsville reporters about the latest escapes from Pathway in Owens Cross Roads and the urgent need to protect children.

In my practice, I too often see the worst-case scenario after warning sign after warning sign goes unaddressed. We cannot wait for another child to suffer devastating harm before taking action.

Officials must investigate how these children are getting out—and what they may be running from.

We recovered $925,000 for a teenager who was abused and neglected at a youth residential treatment facility.

Children are sent to these facilities for help — not to be abused, neglected, or traumatized by the very people entrusted with their care.

When institutions fail to protect children, they must be held accountable. We intend to keep shining a light on abuse in the Troubled Teen Industry, exposing the failures that allow it to happen, and seeking justice for survivors.

Caught on camera beating disabled residents. One worker kneeled on a man’s neck. 26 employees charged with felonies at this state-run facility since 2022 — and NOT ONE has served a day in prison.

This is a taxpayer-funded institution. There is a culture of violence and abuse behind these walls, and the people responsible keep walking free.

Hold them accountable. Shine light. Seek justice.

The allegations at Cornell are horrifying. But this is bigger than one case — and bigger than one college campus.

Sexual abuse happens in places where people should be safe: schools, colleges, residential treatment facilities, group homes, youth programs and other institutions.

When it happens, accountability can’t stop with the individual accused of the abuse. We have to ask:

Who knew? What did they know? And could this have been prevented?

I have spent much of my career representing survivors and families and asking those very questions.

Institutions entrusted with people’s safety must be held accountable when they fail to protect them.
