VA legal assistant Kristi discusses getting your dependents added onto your veterans disability benefit payment:

"I have an older Veteran who needed to add his spouse to his benefits. Our firm had been successful in obtaining a rating that would qualify him to do so. His first attempt to add his wife was not successful, as the VA stated he did not fill out his forms correctly. He was understandably frustrated. Through multiple telephone calls and mailed forms between the two of us, we obtained the requested information that the VA was insisting on. Eventually, the Veteran was able to add his wife, awarding benefits back to the time he had started the process. "

Veterans Disability Legal Assistant Kristi writes about getting healthcare benefits for a client's spouse:

"Our firm primarily deals with Veteran’s disability compensation. We were able to assist a recent veteran in obtaining a 100% rating, as well as Aid and Attendance. That might seem like the end of the story, but the spouse needed additional help with finding appropriate medical benefits for herself. I researched online and sent her the needed information for CHAMPVA benefits, as well as the forms to get started. Assisting our clients does not end with the obvious. There’s always something else we can help with. "

Veterans Disability Legal Assistant Kristi writes about assisting a client's widow obtain monthly benefits, helping to ease the financial pressure after losing her husband:

"A Veteran worked with our firm for years before his untimely passing. We had a bit of a heads up from his wife, as he quickly declined in the final few weeks. She let us know when things took that final turn. She wasn’t sure how to proceed with Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). We were able to take the load off her shoulders and file for her benefits, along with burial benefits, accrued benefits, etc. Since we were already working with her husband before he passed, we were able to get things done in a timely manner, without causing any undue stress on the widow. Veteran's Disability Legal Assistant Kristi writes about getting a Veteran's Compensation and Pension (C&P) Exam rescheduled:

"Recently, I had a veteran who missed his scheduled C&P exam. He was very upset and worried that this might have an adverse effect on his appeal. I encouraged him to contact the VA immediately. I also notified the VA and requested that the exam be rescheduled. Between both methods of contact, the Veteran was able to reschedule his exam, leading to a positive outcome. "

Our Social Security Legal Assistant Sheri writes about a recent win in getting SSA to accept a late appeal--

Scenario: Client hires us after missing 60-day deadline to appeal denial of initial application.

Solution: First, as a legal assistant, my role in this case went far beyond filing paperwork- it required advocacy, precision, and genuine care for the client. When I discovered her case had been closed, after careful investigation and care, I realized that she had been hospitalized at the time her case was closed. Recognizing that this circumstance qualified as “Good Cause” I immediately took action, gathered supporting documentation, and prepared a clear and well-supported request to appeal. Every detail mattered, because one well-prepared request can mean the difference between a client being heard or dismissed from the process.

Social security legal assistants must combine legal knowledge with strong customer service, and unwavering dedication. That means listening carefully, explaining complex processes in plain language, and treating each client with dignity and respect. In this case, I remained committed and determined, in my actions to get this appeal processed.

It took a lot of following up and consistency for Social Security to answer my request. However, in the end my with my support, reliability, dedication, empathy and persistence; we were able to get the claim reopened at the appeal level so that the client would not have to start over. She was grateful for our help and dedication to her case.
