In 2012, Alabama became the 40th state to recognize Juneteenth through the passage of legislation sponsored by State Sen. Hank Sanders. Earlier this year, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey authorized Juneteenth Day — the federal holiday marking the end of slavery — as a holiday for state workers in Alabama.
