Justice O’Connor was the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Sometimes…well truthfully a lot of the time…I am on the only woman in the courtroom. Occupying that space would be far more difficult without the work of trailblazers like Justice O’Connor doing the uncomfortable (but necessary) work of laying the foundation at a time when women were not welcome in those spaces. Her legacy from the bench is one of impartiality, reason and is well rooted in our country’s Constitution. Most importantly, her career is a shining example of service to others, a value notably missing from much of today’s leadership.

She will be missed.

has returned today with Malia Tart, B.A. Class of 2017! “I received my B.A. from the University of Alabama in December 2017. My major was Anthropology. I spent a good deal of my time with the Human Behavioral Ecology Research Group and Dr. Christopher Lynn. The Anthropology Department gave me a home away from home when I first arrived at UA. I am a personal injury attorney with Farris, Riley & Pitt, LLP in Birmingham, Alabama. The study of Anthropology teaches you to think in a holistic way. Personal injury cases have several moving parts, and my background in Anthropology helps me approach my cases with all of those moving parts in mind, which a lot of attorneys have trouble doing. Most importantly, Anthropology is the study of humanity, and a good attorney understands that to do this job well, you have to understand people - how they think, the culture they live in, and what motivates them. Whether I am selecting a jury for trial, or trying to understand my client's damages, my background in Anthropology is always present and indispensable to my practice.”
