Romer v. Evans (1996) was the first Supreme Court case to affirm the constitutional rights of gay people under the Equal Protection Clause
Summary of the Decision:
🔹 The Court struck down Amendment 2, which had been passed by Colorado voters.
🔹 Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the 6–3 majority, stated that the law singled out homosexual and bisexual persons, denying them legal protections available to others.
🔹 The Court ruled the amendment had no legitimate government purpose and was based solely on animus toward a specific group
