We are honored to announce that Bruce Margolin has been drawn, submitted, and chosen as the winner of Oaksterdam University 's first ever digital art contest NFT drop! You can find the masterpiece titled "Justice is Being Served" by Courtney Freeman , bidding on OpenSea. Go check it out!

"The NFT drop was designed to inspire creative thought about the oppressive effects of ma*****na prohibition. It commemorates the 50-year anniversary of Nixon’s declaration of the War on Drugs by asking digital artists to create a virtual art piece that shows their passion to deschedule cannabis. The contest makes a statement because art pieces were created to fight the 50-year War on Drugs while helping up-and-coming artists break into the emerging NFT marketplace.

Artists from across the country entered the social justice art contest, and five works were chosen by a panel of Oaksterdam judges. Now the public can bid on the winning art on OpenSea, a peer-to-peer marketplace for crypto collectibles and non-fungible tokens. One NFT of each piece is up for bid, starting at $420 and will be on sale through Sept. 1, 2021.

“We selected winners based on how well they conveyed the impact of Nixon’s failed War on Drugs. This contest is our way to inspire creative thought about the devastating consequences of U.S. drug policy while dipping our toes into NFT technology and supporting artists’ entry into this exciting new medium.”
- Dale Sky Jones, Oaksterdam University's Executive Chancellor"

WASHINGTON, DC — The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to pass legislation that would make banking services available to the cannabis industry, a landmark vote that marks the first time in history the House has approved a standalone cannabis reform bill.

Though cannabis remains illegal under federal law, House lawmakers passed the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking in Cannabis Act by a 321–103 vote. The measure, which would protect financial institutions and other businesses that provide investments, loans, capital, or other financial services to cannabis companies, now heads to the Senate, where it’s expected to face a tougher fight.

A strong vote, 321-103, moves cannabis banking reform over a major hurdle. Now it's the Senate's turn.

Researchers surveyed 8,805 cannabis consumers between the ages of 21 and 64 who live in one of the 21 cannabis-legal states around the US. LOCALiQ found that 52 percent of respondents said they were able to reduce their use of prescription drugs and 49 percent reduced their use of over-the-counter painkillers, Leafly reports. 37 percent said they reduced their alcohol intake since they began smoking w**d, and 60 percent of respondents said they place priority on living a healthy lifestyle.

TIME TO GET OF THE CHEMICALS AND GET ON TO MOTHER NATURE!!

The survey also reports that most cannabis consumers are buying pot to help them de-stress or treat other medical issues.

House leadership confirmed on Friday that a bipartisan ma*****na banking bill will receive a floor vote next week.

The Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, which cleared the Financial Services Committee in March, will be voted on through a process known as suspension of the rules, requiring two-thirds of the chamber (290 members) to support it for passage.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced the scheduling of the vote in remarks on the House floor on Friday morning.

“We will consider several bills under suspension of the rules, including H.R. 1595, the SAFE Banking Act of 2019, as amended.”

IT WOULD BE SMART TO WRITE TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVE SUPPORTING THIS.

News broke in recent weeks the FBI was jumping into the cannabis industry in order to investigate improper terms and agreements in the legal cannabis area. This news was met with mixed results as the cannabis plant is still illegal under Federal law and the FBI is usually the one breaking down the door of ma*****na growers. On the other hand, there was so much corruption being report in the cannabis space, especially in Massachusetts, that didn’t someone at the Federal level that upholds the law have to jump in, regardless of the subject matter being cannabis.

Thanks to high taxes and overregulation, California reportedly has three times as many illegal ma*****na dispensaries as it does licensed shops.

And that's probably an undercount. The numbers—873 legal vs. 2,835 unlicensed—come from a ma*****na dispensary trade association that made its calculations by looking at who is advertising on W**dmaps, a site helping pot users order ma*****na from dispensaries online. There's probably more than a few unlicensed dispensaries out there who don't advertise on W**dmaps either.

The black market still dominates. And more enforcement and fines aren’t going to fix it.

According to the bill, SB 581 would not only put up the publicly available infractions and crimes applicants have done, but it would post them on either licensing authorities websites or through the California Cannabis Portal. Any and all documents having to do with actions taken against them would also be linked for anyone to view.

The bill has received support, passing the Senate 35-0 in May. Those supporting the bill have pointed out that this is all public information, that the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control have done the same thing for years, and that the ease of the system would lower the amount of requests that the current system of asking for applicant information receives.

Currently in the Assembly, Senate Bill 581, would require authorities to publicly disclose disciplinary actions taken against a Ma*****na applicant or

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said the city supports legal dispensaries, but businesses that operate without permits are endangering those that took the time to wait in line to operate legally. The city estimates there are at least 200 dispensaries operating illegally, with a high concentration in South Los Angeles.

“Illegal operations are getting in the way of opportunity,” Garcetti said. “They’re undercutting more than 300 local businesses that have temporary licenses to legally sell cannabis here in L.A.”

“We are seeing h**p cultivation dramatically expand in the U.S. in 2019, with over quadruple the number of acres licensed in h**p compared to last year and the addition of 13 more states with h**p programs,” Vote H**p President Eric Steenstra said in a press release. “Now that we have lifted federal prohibition on h**p farming, it’s time build the infrastructure and expand h**p cultivation and the market for h**p products across the country so that all can reap the benefits of this versatile and sustainable crop.”

A total of 16,877 state licenses to cultivate h**p were issued to farmers and researchers this year, a 476 percent increase over 2018, the group found. Additionally there was a 483 percent annual jump in h**p processing licenses issued in 2019.

Licensed h**p cultivation is way up in 2019 thanks to the crop's federal legalization through last year's Farm Bill.
