Clark Kerr garden open hours start today, and will continue every Wednesday this summer from 4-6pm! Today, we'll be planting the rest of our summer starts - peppers, tomatoes, squash, & beans! It would be lovely to see you there - wash your hands and don a face covering before you arrive so we can keep each other safe.

If you can't make it over to Clark Kerr Campus, SOGA Garden is also having open hours today from 4-7pm, at the corner of Walnut & Virginia St.

We're proud to be a part of Berkeley Student Farms, a fresh coalition of student cultivators organized by Annika at the Berkeley Food Institute. We recognize that we cultivate on land that rightfully belongs to the Ohlone people.

what's good y'all? a more official open hours announcement to come, but just wanted to let you know I'll be hosting open hours to the gardens starting this week!

Brown's herb garden: every tuesday from 4-6pm
Clark Kerr vegetable garden: every Wednesday 4-6pm

Yup, that means I'll be out at Brown's this evening doing some pruning and planting! Feel free to drop by, and make sure to wear a face mask and drink plenty of water! I'll provide the tools, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

Also, check out this super sick calender of all the open hours hosted by campus farms and gardens (collectively known as Berkeley Student Farms) made by Annika Levaggi at the Berkeley Food Institute!

See you around!

Just two days until we'll put the vegetable starts out for you to plant at home!

Now is a great time to prepare your soil with organic matter to nourish the plants. I like to crack the ground open with a pitchfork or shovel and mix it with compost (available for free at the garden). If planting in the ground feels strange, you can always grow a vegetable in a pot or a raised bed filled with some potting soil!

If you want to know more about soil prep, check out this article or email [email protected]. We're always down to talk about plants.

The biggest mistake beginning gardeners make is using lousy or too-thin soil. Before planting anything in your yard, prepare your garden beds by digging to loosen the soil and adding organic material! This prep work can save you untold disappointment and, perhaps more than any other factor, assure a...

If you're looking to grow food at home, look no further!

We just seeded a bunch of trays of summer vegetables that we'll put out at Clark Kerr garden in about a month when they are ready to plant. These starts will be for anybody to take - for free, honey! Annika made a great guide to help you find the right environment for these yung ones.

By May you can come pick up starts for:
corn
pumpkins
okra
lemon cucumber
purple kale
rainbow chard
spinach
tomatoes
thai long beans
marigolds
basil

We'll have more herbs coming soon! Let us know if you have any specific plant requests or questions about starting a home garden!

Take care!

homemade hand sanitizer recipe:

ingredients:
- 3/4 cup of rubbing alcohol (90%) or isopropyl
- 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel (browns has an aloe plant!)
- 10 drops of essential oil* or lemon juice

directions
- pour all ingredients into a bowl
- whisk until gel consistency is achieved

***you can also make your own essential oils by following these steps:
1. Place herbs in crockpot and add water until the container is 3⁄4 full.
2. Turn to high heat and once water is hot turn down to low and simmer on low for 3-4 hours.
3. Let crockpot cool and then place in refrigerator until a thin film layer of oil hardens on the surface. Remove oil from water carefully.
4. Alternatively, if you do not have access to a crockpot, you can place the herbs in a glass jar filled with oil (almond, coconut, etc) and leave in direct sunlight for 2-3 days.

hello fellow garden-goers!

during this unsettling and difficult time, we want to remind you all that the gardens are & will remain open for all to use whether that looks like harvesting food and medicine, reading a book (or zooming) outside, smelling the flowers (they are also great listeners!), or moving your body.

we currently have an abundance of lemons & medical herbs at both Clark Kerr & Browns. we have attached a PDF of information about the medicinal herbs available at browns and how to use them.

please don't hesitate to reach out for support.

with love,
annika & dana
