This evening I went before the Benton Charter Township Planning Commission and received unanimous approval for a home occupation permit for the home I inherited from my father after his passing on March 29, 2025.

It was about a year ago today that I formally decided that I wanted to use this home to honor his legacy and leave a lasting impact in the community where I was raised.

So, in addition to law, mediation and education, I want this home to serve as an emergency/respite placement for children in foster care and a location for supervised parenting time, including availability on nights and weekends.

I don't want children and caseworkers sleeping in DHHS offices for days on end. I don't want children awaiting long term mental health or residential placement to be stuck in the ER for days or weeks on end. I don't want parents to be limited to one or two hours a week to bond with their children. So, I am creating a place that will offer solutions to those problems.

The planning commission has given me 90 days to get approval from DHHS, so I need the support from my foster care community! I'll be on the phone with licensing in the morning!

Thank you Dad for sowing the seed. I miss you and I love you.

My seasonal allergies have been in charge since I got back from Italy, but I hope they will give me enough of a break for this month's show.

Since bringing back The Legal Hour as a podcast I have been doing the show on the last Sunday of the month. When I realized a few months ago that the last Sunday of this month was the 29th, I originally said "nope." But I have a story to tell. I don't know if it will help with my healing, I honestly don't know if I'll make it through without crying, but I hope it will help you and your family.

My father passed away on March 29, 2025 within a week of my finding out he was terminally ill. This was less than five months after my mother had a stroke. As an only child, I was “in charge” of everything for both of them.

I have been doing estate planning and probate law for over ten years, but I have learned more in the last year and a half as a client than in all my years of practice. I will be giving you tips on how to navigate the systems in a way I only knew from the lawyer’s perspective before now.

The Road to Restoration clinic will be back in Benton Harbor this week on Wednesday. I have personally witnessed people who have struggled to get their license back for YEARS walk out with a valid license in hand. Others were able to get administrative hearings scheduled and then successful reinstatement after the hearing.

This is different than expungement. If you've had a successful expungement of a driving offense, it may still be on your driving record. Driving history and criminal history are two different reports!
