Think your will solves everything? It often doesn’t. I meet people who assume a will controls every asset. It doesn’t. Jointly owned property, retirement accounts, life insurance, payable/transfer-on-death accounts, and properly funded trusts can all pass outside your will. That means your wishes might not be carried out unless titling and beneficiary forms match your plan.

I want this to be simple. Review who’s named on your accounts. Check beneficiary forms. Make sure trust assets are retitled into the trust. Small steps now can avoid long, costly probate later and keep your plan working the way you intend.

If you’re in Greater Boston and want a clear review, we’re here to help. Call 617-489-5900 or read more: https://wix.to/hpa33XZ

Many people believe that once they have a will, their estate plan is complete. A will is important, but it does not avoid probate, and it doesn't control certain assets. In most cases, avoiding probate is a good thing. However, the first step is to understand what you own and how it is titled. Estat...

Long-term care does not always mean a nursing home.

We help families see the options. You can get care at home, move to assisted living, or use programs like PACE so nursing homes are a last resort. Mike’s story shows how planning can bring someone back to their own apartment with the right supports.

Plan early. Make home modifications. Hire caregivers. Talk to an elder law attorney about Medicaid (MassHealth) and protecting assets. We’ve been serving Greater Boston since 2001 and are ready to help

Why a healthcare proxy and guardianship are not interchangeable. 🏥🧑‍⚖️📝

A healthcare proxy works when someone cannot communicate. It lets your chosen agent make medical decisions. Guardianship is a court order. It can give broader authority, including when someone refuses care.

In Massachusetts, as long as someone can still express their wishes, even if they are unreasonable, the healthcare proxy's power is limited. That gap is where families often get stuck and scramble for authority.

We help families spot that gap early. Sometimes guardianship is the right step. Sometimes a health care proxy-affirmation filing is a faster, more targeted option. We explain the choices and help you move forward with confidence.

Most estate planning assumes a certain kind of life: a spouse, children nearby, a sibling who could step in, or a network of people who would show up if something happened. But not everyone has that. And for the growing number of people aging without close family support, those who are single, widowe...

In the Boston area, nursing home care can cost $200,000 a year or more. It's no surprise many families consider adding a child's name to the house to protect it. But that decision is rarely as simple, or as safe, as it sounds.

Attorney Kathy McNair compares four different approaches- outright transfers, joint ownership, life estates, and irrevocable trusts and the real trade-offs each one carries, from loss of control to capital gains tax consequences.
