Here's one I see more than people realize 👀

A parent adds one adult child to their checking account "just to help pay bills."

Totally reasonable.

Except in Massachusetts, if that child is added as a joint owner instead of an authorized signer, the account doesn't follow your will when you pass.

It goes straight to whoever's name is on it.

I've watched this quietly undo an entire estate plan.

One sibling ends up with the account balance simply because their name happened to be on it, while the will says everything should be split evenly. Nobody meant for that to happen. It just did.

The fix depends on what you're actually trying to accomplish, help managing bills now, or an inheritance later, because those are two different things with two different setups.

If you've ever added someone to an account "for convenience," it's worth a second look.

I'd rather catch this on a Tuesday afternoon than have your family sort it out during a much harder week.

One of the challenges with searching estate planning advice online is that not everything you read applies to Massachusetts.

I can't tell you how many times someone has said,

"I read that I could just add a Transfer-on-Death deed to my house."

Here's the thing...

Massachusetts doesn't currently allow Transfer-on-Death deeds for real estate.

That means advice you find online, especially from national articles or social media, may not apply to your situation.

It's one of the reasons I always encourage families to ask questions instead of assuming the internet has the right answer.

Estate planning isn't one-size-fits-all.

And when it comes to protecting your home and your family, local guidance really matters.

Dropped off my college girl last week for her SENIOR year. Not sure how we got here so fast. Emily's happy and thriving and exactly where she needs to be but oh my mama heart.

I always hold it together till I drive away.. something about looking back and watching a woman wave at me, where just five minutes ago a little girl waved at me.. eek. Always so proud of my bug.

The nostalgia hit hard last week.. some days it feels like yesterday I walked these same hills, these hills that shaped so much of who I am today.. to watch it do the same to Emily is an extraordinary privilege and joy. Holy Cross for life.

I broke down in front of my clients this past week.

Not exactly how I pictured my work week going.

To start... I have learned FIRST HAND how hard it is to run a home office while your house is under construction.

I had a family room project happening, a shed being delivered, junk being hauled away, work being done on my garage, AND my stove decided it was the perfect time to stop working for three days.

Needless to say... I was a little frazzled.

I had a client come in for their second meeting, and I tried SO hard to be my normal, friendly self.

But they could tell something was off.

They looked at me and simply asked, "Are you okay?"

The floodgates opened.

I shared how overwhelmed I was feeling by all of the projects, the constant interruptions, and the chaos.

If you know me, you know I thrive on organization.

(Probably one of the reasons I became an estate planning attorney in the first place. )

What happened next surprised me.

Instead of feeling embarrassed that I wasn't "holding it all together," we had one of the most genuine conversations.

They told me they appreciated that I was willing to be real with them.

That seeing the human behind the attorney actually reinforced that they had chosen the right person.

We finished our meeting laughing about the week's adventures and all the ways home projects somehow manage to take longer and cost more than anyone expects.

Then, that evening around 6:00, there was a knock on my door.

It was my client.

They had made dinner for my family because they knew our stove wasn't working.

I was completely speechless.

It wasn't just the meal (which was delicious).

It was the kindness behind it.

It reminded me that the best relationships are never one-sided.

Yes, I'm here to guide my clients through important legal decisions.

But over the years, I've learned that this work is about so much more than signing documents.

It's about people showing up for one another.

Sometimes that means helping someone create an estate plan.

Sometimes it means accepting a homemade dinner when life gets a little messy.

And sometimes, it means remembering that none of us have to be perfect.

We're all just doing our best.

Families have a funny way of changing over time.

Sometimes the biggest oversight isn't forgetting a document.

It's forgetting how much life has changed since you signed it.

Every fall, I watch families celebrate an exciting new chapter.

College move-in day.

New beginnings.

Big dreams.

But there's one thing many parents don't realize...

The day your child turns 18, you're no longer automatically able to make certain medical or financial decisions on their behalf.

Even though they'll always be your child, the law sees them as an adult.

It's not something most parents think about while buying dorm room supplies and extra-long twin sheets.

But a Healthcare Proxy and Durable Power of Attorney can become incredibly important if there's ever an emergency.
