I’ve realized I don’t really know how to walk through a house like a normal person anymore.
Most people walk in and see the kitchen. I walk in and look up. Is that ceiling nine feet or eight, and does the room actually feel like it? Then the windows: which way they face, what light they’ll get at 4pm in January, and whether someone placed them for the view or just for the framing plan.
I notice where the flooring changes and whether anyone thought about it. I notice if the path from the garage to the kitchen cuts through the living room. And I’m quietly sorting everything into two lists: what’s easy to change, and what’s going to be expensive to change. Paint and fixtures go on the first list. A low ceiling, a load-bearing wall in the wrong place, or a yard that drains toward the foundation go on the second.
Spending enough time on job sites will do that to you. It’s also my favorite part of this work, because the second list is usually where the real value, or the real problem, is hiding.
So I’m curious: what’s the first thing you notice when you walk into a house?
