Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a potentially fatal condition that damages your infant’s digestive tissue. It most often affects premature infants, although full-term babies can also develop NEC. Prompt treatment depends on recognizing the symptoms of this condition. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, common symptoms include abdominal pain, a belly that is discolored, and changes in bowel movements, such as constipation or diarrhea. You may also notice black or bloody stools, as well as lethargy and decreased activity. As the condition progresses, your child may experience more severe symptoms, such as respiratory failure and sepsis.
