The new hands free law takes effect today.

Here's is what the law says:

"An individual shall not hold or use a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle."

This expressly includes using your cell phone to:

(i) Send or receive a telephone call.
(ii) Send, receive, or read a text message.
(iii) View, record, or transmit a video.
(iv) Access, read, or post to a social networking site.

Now there are some exceptions, the important ones are:

(1) Calling/Texting 9-1-1 to report an emergency
(2) Calling to report a reckless/drunk driver
(3) Calling to report a crime being committed
(4) Using a single button press, tap, or swipe to activate or deactivate a feature or function of the mobile electronic device or to select a telephone number or name

If found in violation, you could be subject to fines and community service, including double fines if you are in violation and you cause an accident.
