A judge should never walk into a courtroom blind.

Preparation matters.

Read the pleadings. Understand the basic facts. Know what legal issues the attorneys are asking you decide. If there's a question of law requiring research, do the research.

That preparation allows you to spend your time in court doing what you're supposed to be doing: listening to the testimony, considering the evidence, and applying the law.

I've seen firsthand how much more efficiently cases can move when everyone comes prepared.

East Baton Rouge Parish Family Court is busy; and the issues before it are too important to rush to judgment. However, even if a matter needs to be taken under advisement, a judge needs to be mindful that delaying a ruling only keeps the parties on edge fearing the unknown outcome.

It’s a delicate balance, being prepared but keeping an open mind before a trial’s conclusion while simultaneously being mindful of the litigants’ and attorney’s time and financial resources.

If there's one thing more than 20 years of practicing family law has taught me, it's that there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Your friend's custody case isn't your custody case.
Your neighbor's divorce isn't your divorce.

Even when two cases sound similar, the facts can be completely different. And how the law applies to those facts can be different too.

Family law deals with children, relationships, finances, mental health, substance abuse, domestic violence, and sometimes all those things at once.

That's what makes this area of law so complex.

You have to be willing to look at the individual facts, listen carefully, know the law, and understand that every family walking into that courtroom has its own story.
