International Women’s Day always reminds me how fortunate I am to work alongside so many incredible women in the legal profession.

⚖️ Women who walk into courtrooms prepared, confident, and ready to advocate.
⚖️ Women who mentor younger attorneys, share knowledge, and lift others up along the way.
⚖️ Women who balance demanding careers, families, and communities, yet still find time to support one another.

The practice of law can be intense and competitive, but some of the strongest professionals I know are women who believe there is room for all of us to succeed.

Grateful for the women who challenge me, support me, and remind me that collaboration and mentorship will always move this profession forward.

Co-parenting isn’t easy. It’s not supposed to be.

You’re not in love anymore, you may have never been in love, or you may not even like each other…and that’s okay. But one thing hasn’t changed: you are both still your child’s parent.

Your child doesn’t see an “ex.”
They see mom and dad.

You don’t have to feel warm and fuzzy about your co-parent to show up the right way for your kids. But you do have a responsibility to make sure your personal feelings don’t interfere with their emotional well-being.

That might look like:
• Keeping your opinions about your ex to yourself.
• Supporting your child’s relationship with the other parent (when safe to do so).
• Communicating when necessary, even when it’s uncomfortable.
• Putting your child’s needs above your own frustrations.

Co-parenting can be cooperative, parallel, or high-conflict. There’s no perfect formula. But there is a guiding principle:

Love your kids more than you hate your ex.

At the end of the day, your children will remember how they felt growing up, not the details of your conflict.

Make sure they feel loved, supported, and protected.

Proud to announce that attorney Jessica Ernst has been selected for recognition by Super Lawyers®, a distinction awarded to only a small percentage of attorneys each year based on peer recognition and professional achievement. She was named to the 2025 Ohio Rising Stars Family Law list. This honor is awarded to only the top 2.5% of attorneys who are 40 years old or younger or have been in practice for 10 years or less.

Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding attorneys from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made through a rigorous, patented multiphase process that includes: Peer nominations, Independent research and evaluation, and Peer reviews by practice area. The result is a credible, comprehensive, and diverse listing of attorneys recognized for excellence in their practice of law.

Super Lawyers and Rising Stars honorees are featured annually in Super Lawyers magazines which came out this week, as well as in leading city, regional, and national publications across the country.

International Women's Day is a global observance that honors the achievements and contributions of women while advocating for gender equality. This day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the challenges that remain in the pursuit of equal rights and opportunities for all women.

I hope today serves as an inspiration to continue supporting and empowering the women in your lives.

When going through a divorce or custody battle, it can be very difficult to learn to “protect your peace”! But what does that mean?

Up until this point, possibly for the last several years, you’ve been at war with your ex, on guard at all times, and constantly fighting to be heard, understood, or vindicated. That mentally and physically wears on you – from tense muscles to a shortened temper.

To eliminate the volatility and taxing emotions from your day-to-day, I urge you to remember the following tips when talking with your ex:

1. Set boundaries.
2. Stop trying to win, and start trying to understand.
3. Focus on resolving issues, rather than assigning blame for past actions.
4. If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing.
5. Don’t be afraid to walk away.

My biggest piece of advice to those learning to protect their peace is in the comments!
