⚠️ Scam Alert: Fake Traffic Violation Texts ⚠️

The Maine Judicial Branch is warning the public about fraudulent text messages claiming to be “final enforcement notices” for unpaid traffic violations, including tolls, speeding tickets, and parking violations.

These messages may demand immediate payment and include links, QR codes, or barcodes. These are scams. The Maine Judicial Branch does not send enforcement notices or request payment by text.

If you receive one of these messages:
• Do not click any links or scan codes
• Do not provide personal or payment information

If you have questions about a traffic violation, contact the Maine Violations Bureau Helpline at 207-783-5422 (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM).

⚖️ Legal Term of the Week: Easement ⚖️

An easement is a legal right that allows someone to use a portion of another person’s property for a specific purpose, even though they do not own the land.

Common examples include utility easements for power lines or water pipes, and access easements that allow a neighbor to use a driveway or pathway.

Easements are an important consideration in real estate transactions and property development because they can affect how a property may be used.

⚖️ Law Day – May 1 ⚖️

Established in 1958, Law Day encourages reflection on how the legal system supports the rights and freedoms that shape everyday life.

The 2026 Law Day theme, “The Rule of Law and the American Dream,” highlights a foundational principle of our legal system: that no person is above the law.

The rule of law helps ensure that individuals and businesses can operate with fairness, stability, and predictability which creates an environment where people are able to pursue opportunities, build livelihoods, and plan for the future.

At Rudman Winchell, we are proud to be part of a profession that helps clients navigate legal challenges and supports the continued strength of Maine’s business and community landscape.
