The family and estate of Alexander “Alex” LaMorie, a 25-year-old person with autism, have filed a lawsuit in federal court against Howard County, Maryland and three Howard County Police Department officers who shot and killed Alex after he called 911 for help and police encountered him in the throes of a mental health crisis outside his home at Patuxent Commons in Howard County—a housing community for adults with autism and disabilities. In a major victory for LGBTQ+ workplace equality, the Fourth Circuit has affirmed a ruling in favor of John Doe, a gay employee whose husband was denied health insurance benefits by Catholic Relief Services. In a 2-1 decision, the court rejected the CRS’s arguments that its religious beliefs exempted it from liability under federal and Maryland employment discrimination laws. A major victory for voting rights: A federal court has ruled that California’s Vote-by-Mail Program discriminates against blind voters and others with print disabilities, violating the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and California law.
