Congratulations to Steffani L. Langston on becoming a published author!

Steffani was invited to contribute a chapter to the Maryland State Bar Association’s *Protective & Peace Order Cases in Maryland: A Practice Manual* — an incredible professional accomplishment and a meaningful contribution to Maryland’s legal community.

We are especially proud of Steffani for taking on a challenge outside of her comfort zone, saying yes, and seeing it all the way through to the finished publication.

Congratulations, Steffani. We are lucky to have you on the Wasserman White team!

True or False: If an asset is in your name, it is automatically protected in divorce.

False.

In Maryland, property acquired during the marriage can still be considered marital property regardless of whose name is on the title. There are important exceptions, but ownership on paper does not always tell the whole story.

That is one reason conversations about property, finances and prenuptial agreements can matter before marriage.

A prenup can help create clarity around what each person is bringing into the marriage, how certain assets may be treated, and what both people expect moving forward.

The goal is not to plan for a divorce. It is to understand the legal and financial implications before you get married.

Have questions about a prenup or how property may be treated in Maryland? The team at Wasserman White is here to help.

As summer comes to a close, we’re grateful for the time we had with Giulia as a Summer Law Clerk at Wasserman White.

Throughout the summer, she brought curiosity, thoughtfulness, and a genuine willingness to learn to every experience, from client matters and mediation to the day-to-day work that makes family law so meaningful.

We’re proud to be a place where the next generation of attorneys can learn, ask questions, gain real-world experience, and better understand what it means to advocate for people during some of the most important moments in their lives.

Thank you for being part of our team this summer, Giulia. We’re excited to see where your career takes you next.

A free legal consultation can sound like the obvious place to start.

But before choosing a lawyer based on the word “free,” it is worth asking what that consultation is actually designed to give you.

Will the attorney you meet be involved in your case moving forward? Are they looking at the full strategy or only one piece of the matter? Have they taken the time to understand your situation before the conversation even begins?

At Wasserman White, our consultations are paid because we believe that time should be substantive. Our intake process is designed to give the attorney context before the meeting, allow for preparation and research when needed, and make the conversation about your actual situation rather than simply whether you might become a client.

The goal is not to make the first meeting free.

The goal is to make it valuable.

Before you choose “free,” make sure you understand what you are actually getting.

Sending a child off to college comes with a long checklist.

Housing. Tuition. Meal plans. Move-in dates. Insurance.

But there is one category many families overlook: the legal documents that may matter once your child turns 18.

At that point, parents may no longer automatically have the same ability to access medical information, make decisions in an emergency, or step in on certain financial matters.

That is why documents such as a health care power of attorney, HIPAA authorization and, in some situations, a financial power of attorney can be worth discussing before move-in day.

It is not about expecting something to go wrong. It is about making sure your family is prepared if your child needs your help.

If you have a child heading to college or turning 18 soon, the attorneys at Wasserman White are happy to help you understand what documents may make sense for your family.

Back-to-school expenses can add up quickly. Supplies, uniforms, technology, activities, fees... and when parents are separated, the question of who pays can become another source of conflict.

There is not always a simple 50/50 answer.

In Maryland, child support is calculated using statutory guidelines, and certain additional expenses can be allocated separately by agreement or court order. Your existing custody agreement, child support order and the specific expense all matter.

Before turning a school-supply disagreement into a bigger fight, start with the documents already governing your arrangement and understand what they actually require.

And if the answer is not clear, that is where good legal guidance can help.

Questions about child support, shared expenses or your parenting agreement? The attorneys at Wasserman White are here to help.

Even an amicable divorce can still feel emotional, unfamiliar and frightening.

I am grateful to this client for sharing her experience and for trusting me and our team to guide her through the process with patience, care and clarity.

In family law, the legal work matters. So does making sure clients feel heard, respected and supported while they move through one of the most personal transitions of their lives.

Thank you for the kind words and for allowing us to be part of this chapter.

For anyone navigating a divorce or family law matter and wondering what the process could look like, I would be glad to connect and help you better understand your options.

A smoother school year often starts with clearer expectations at home.

Whether you are married, separated or divorced, it helps to confirm the regular school-week schedule, transportation responsibilities, access to important information, how changes will be communicated and who will manage forms, fees and deadlines.

These may feel like small logistical details, but uncertainty around them can quickly create stress for parents and children alike.

A little planning now can create greater clarity and consistency throughout the school year. Save this checklist, share it with your co-parent or partner and visit wassermanwhite.com with questions about your family’s circumstances.
