Thank you to everyone that joined us during the 18th Congress of the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA), which took place July 7-10 at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) in Salvador, Brazil. Edward Shore’s panel addressed the landmark decision at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the case of Quilombola Communities of Alcantara v. Brazil (2024), which was the first time the tribunal rendered a judgment finding Brazil responsible for its failure to title Quilombola territories in violation of Brazil’s Constitution and the American Convention on Human Rights. Quilombolas are inhabitants of quilombos, rural Black communities descended from enslaved Africans and Afro-Brazilians.

International conferences like BRASA empower Quilombolas to expand their networks, forge new connections with advocates and stakeholders, and publicize their struggle for territorial rights domestically and abroad. A special thank you to our co-panelists Dr. Davi Pereira Junior, Dr. Danilo Serejo Lopes, and Dr. Lorrayne Silva.

This summer, Graves Dougherty was happy to welcome University of Texas School of Law student Teresa O. King as a summer associate. During her internship she worked with our litigation team on research, drafting, and case work.

Prior to her time with GDHM, Teresa graduated summa cm laude from Texas Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science & in Criminal Justice, followed by her first year at UT Law. Next fall she will be the Events Director for the Women’s Law Caucus. As a recipient of the Lora Livingston fellowship, she will spend the rest of her summer as a clerk at the Travis County District Courts.

Our team very much enjoyed working with Teresa and is excited to see what she takes on following law school. Best wishes Teresa!

Graves Dougherty gathered to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Independence with some traditional treats. While we made sure to have some fun, we also reflected on how far our nation has come and our commitment to support our community, both in the practice of law and through service.

The firm will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of the holiday. We wish you a safe and joyful holiday!
