This year has brought tremendous change and professional growth as I shifted from working in public defender offices to opening my own solo law firm. It has been an honor to represent the indigent population of Travis County, Texas, and tell my client's stories while fighting for the best possible outcome to their pending criminal charges. It's been my further privilege to give back to my local legal community through service on the board of directors for the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. I look forward to continuing this work in 2024, and send well wishes to all for a Happy New Year!

Sixty years ago today, the Supreme Court unanimously held that "lawyers in criminal courts are necessities, not luxuries" and that the "right to be heard would be, in many cases, of little avail if it did not comprehend the right to be heard by counsel." With that decision in Gideon v. Wainwright, the right to have counsel in a criminal case, regardless of socio-economic status, began in earnest.

I have served as a public defender since graduating from law school in 2007. I am proud to continue to represent clients through court-appointed work in my new solo practice. And so, I wanted to take a moment today to celebrate the man who made that possible. Happy Gideon's Day!
