This is the kind of action we need to see more of.

Austin has adopted new resident protections after mold complaints brought unsafe housing conditions to the city’s attention.

Families should not have to keep getting sick while landlords debate whether a problem is serious enough to fix.

When residents speak up, government should listen. When housing is unsafe, the rules should protect the people living there.

The answer is not silence. It is accountability.

Back-to-school should not come with a side of water damage and mold.

Hundreds of students at Ramona Elementary had to be relocated after severe water damage raised mold concerns.

That is not a small facilities issue. That is a health and safety issue.

Schools do not get to wait until children are sick or classrooms are closed to take the building seriously.

When there is water intrusion, investigate it. Fix it. Protect the kids.

Children should not have to get sick before adults act.

Families are not suing because they found a little mold.

They are suing because homes were built wrong, water got in, people got sick, and the people responsible are fighting over who should pay for the harm.

The Wall Street Journal is calling attention to what we see in these cases every day: construction defects, moisture intrusion, competing testing, and families left carrying the consequences.

Builders can debate the testing. They can debate the medicine. They can debate the cost of remediation.

But they cannot build homes that fail to manage water and then act surprised when families demand accountability.

Families should not be forced to absorb the cost of someone else’s failure to follow the safety rules. That is what the law is for.

It’s Saturday, I’m in Hawaii, and I’m preparing for trial.

I’ve been thinking about the kind of lawyer I want to be for my client.

Lawyers can be dramatic. Loud. Angry. There is a time and place for that.

But when I walk into a courtroom, my job is not to perform. My job is to tell my client’s story clearly enough that the jury can see what happened to them.
