Arthur Cofield, 34, escaped from FCI Jesup on May 26. He has ties to Metro Atlanta and should be considered ARMED AND DANGEROUS.
According to court records, Cofield allegedly pulled off one of the most unbelievable fraud schemes in recent memory, all while incarcerated. Investigators say he used a contraband cellphone to steal a victim's identity, gain access to financial accounts, and orchestrate the purchase of more than 6,100 American Gold Eagle coins valued at nearly $11 MILLION.
The gold was reportedly transported by a private security company on a chartered aircraft from Idaho to Atlanta, where it was allegedly picked up using false identification.
Authorities say the money didn't stop there. The investigation alleges that millions of dollars were funneled into the purchase of a six-bedroom luxury residence in one of Atlanta's most exclusive areas.
Cofield was serving an 11-year, 3-month federal sentence related to fraud and identity theft convictions. Court records also indicate he was previously serving time for armed robbery and faced additional criminal charges.
