One of the things no one seems to understand is Portuguese sayings when I say them in English. They all make since, trust me they mean something!!!

Throwback Thursday!

The most famous holiday in Portuguese culture is the 25th of April. This day celebrates the Carnation Revolution, which freed Portugal from a dictatorship started by Antonio de Oliveira Salazar in 1928. Though Salazar was no longer in power by the time of the revolution in 1974, the Estado Novo dictatorship was still in place. A military coup managed to overthrow Estado Novo, largely through nonviolence. To celebrate the peaceful victory, activist Celeste Caeiro placed carnations in the gun barrels and pockets of military officers. After other activists followed suit, the flowers were forever linked with the revolution.

Retorno a quinta-feira!

Did you know... 🤔

The question that most Portuguese are asked is "You're Portuguese, so you're from Spain, do you speak Spanish?" No, in Portugal they speak Portuguese not Spanish, and Portugal and Spain are two countries not one.

Portugal has a proud history and they are proud people. They built the world's first global empire hundreds of years ago, which spanned from Brazil to India, from Africa to East Timor. In fact many people believe the Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover Australia, and even New Zealand.

As a consequence the Portuguese language is spoken in Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Principe, Guinea-Bissau, Brazil, East Timor and Macau. These countries make up the "Lusosphere".

So, while their country is surrounded by Spain, the Portuguese have long had their own national identity, and they also have their own language.

Certainly the Portuguese have a shared history and affinity with Spaniards, but their language is not derived from Spanish as many clumsily assume.

Esses países constituem a "Lusofonia".

This is a documentary style language profile about the Portuguese language which is spoken in Portugal, Brazil, and beyond. * If you're learning Portuguese, ...
