An insurance company said a case capped out at $500,000. It settled for $6 million.

Attorney Matt Kahn explains how. The policy contained a sublimit for assault and battery claims, which limited that type of payout to $500,000. A lot of cases would have stopped right there.

Instead, our team dug deep into the policy language and built a claim that did not arise from the assault and battery itself. That claim fell outside the sublimit, and the outcome changed dramatically.

The lesson: the fine print in an insurance policy can be the difference between a fraction of a case's value and its full value.

Today we observe Juneteenth.

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers reached Galveston, Texas, and the last enslaved African Americans finally learned they were free.

Juneteenth is a day of celebration, reflection, and remembrance. It honors the resilience of those who endured, and it reminds us that the work of justice and equality is ongoing.

From all of us at Butler Kahn, we wish you a meaningful Juneteenth.

Losing someone you love to another person's negligence changes everything. In the middle of grief, many families are also left with hard questions, including how long a wrongful death case takes.

There is no single answer, but Georgia cases tend to follow a pattern. A straightforward case that settles early may resolve in six to twelve months. More complex cases, especially those that go to trial or involve appeals, can take two years or longer.

The timeline depends on things like the investigation, discovery, insurance negotiations, and court scheduling.

If your family is facing this, you do not have to navigate it alone. We are here to answer your questions.

Be careful who you hand your keys to.

In Georgia, you can be held legally responsible if you let someone borrow your vehicle and they cause a crash through their own negligence. Attorney Matt Kahn explains the concept.

It is called negligent entrustment. The idea is that lending your car to the wrong person can put you on the hook for the damage they cause.

Before you let anyone borrow your vehicle, make sure they have a valid driver's license, that they drive responsibly, and that they are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

It is a small check that can save you from a serious legal headache.

If a dog bites you in Georgia, you may not have to prove the owner knew the dog was dangerous.

Attorney Tom Giannotti breaks down a key part of Georgia dog bite law. If an owner lets their dog off leash in a city or county with a leash law, like Atlanta and many metro counties, and that dog bites and injures someone, that can be negligence per se.

In plain terms, you do not have to show the dog had a vicious history. You only have to show two things: the owner knew the dog was off leash in violation of the law, and you did nothing to provoke the dog.

That is a meaningful difference, and a lot of people do not realize it after an attack.

We made attorney Graham Roberts pick a side. Standing desk, noise-canceling headphones, or a second monitor. One gets dismissed, one gets advocated for, one gets affirmed.

The standing desk? Dismissed. Graham owns one. Graham loves the idea of one. Graham also admits he barely uses it. We respect the honesty.

The headphones earned the advocacy, and we get it. When the day gets loud and the chaos sets in, those things are a lifeline.

But the multiple monitors? Affirmed without hesitation. Once you go past one screen, there is no going back.

What setup would you defend to the death? Drop your hill in the comments.

The US Supreme Court just made it harder for trucking middlemen to dodge responsibility after a crash.

In a unanimous ruling, the Court held that a freight broker can be sued for its role in hiring a dangerous trucking company. The case involved a man who lost part of his leg when a speeding truck slammed into his parked vehicle.

The broker argued that federal law shielded it from state lawsuits. The Court disagreed, finding the claim fell within a motor vehicle safety exception.

Why it matters for Georgia: several of the country's largest freight brokers are based right here, in College Park, Atlanta, and Covington. This ruling opens the door for injured Georgians to hold brokers accountable when they put unsafe carriers on the road.

"Alpharetta Autobahn" is not on any map. But if you have driven GA-400, you know exactly why Matt calls it that.

Everybody is speeding. Everybody is late. And apparently a few folks have decided turn signals are a personal choice.

Watch what happens when a car slides over with zero warning. Consider this your sign to leave a few car lengths up front. That little cushion is the only thing standing between you and someone else's bad decision.

We grew up dodging traffic on 400 too, so trust us on this one.

Got hit on 400 and it was not your fault? Let's talk.

Three call times. Three verdicts.

Graham Roberts ranks the most awkward moments a client can call their lawyer and tells you which ones our team actually answers.

2 a.m.? Dismissed.

Holiday? Advocated. Text back, set up a call.

Friday at 5? Affirmed. Picked up.
