Last week in Las Vegas, KPPB LAW patent attorneys Kermit Lopez and Luis Ortiz, JD, MBA, CLP® stepped into the fast lane at the EV Charging Summit—where the future of transportation is not just imagined but being built in real time. From next-gen charging stations to scalable infrastructure and smart grid technologies, innovation is accelerating at a relentless pace. Across the board, from global original equipment manufacturers to emerging startups, one theme was clear: protecting innovation is essential. Patents and trademarks are legal tools and strategic assets that define ownership, create competitive advantage, and long-term value.

In fast-moving industries like EV—and increasingly, every industry—an intellectual property strategy isn’t something you revisit later. It’s a safe guard you build-in early and refine often. Whether you’re launching your first idea or scaling an established product portfolio, bringing in an IP perspective from the start may be the difference between leading an industry and chasing it. When you are ready for a conversation about protecting your technology, product, or brand, talk with Kermit or Luis at 505-314-1310 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

KPPB LAW co-founder Sonjui L. Kumar has been appointed the general counsel of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF). NAMWOLF announced the appointment during the association’s Spring Meeting in Nashville on Feb. 28, 2026.

This appointment comes after nearly two decades of KPPB LAW’s engagement with NAMWOLF, where Sonjui and her colleagues have contributed and served in various capacities. Sonjui previously served as a board member and chair of multiple committees, including the Law Firm Management Committee and the International Law PAC. KPPB LAW joined NAMWOLF in 2008, and was the first South Asian-owned law firm member. The general counsel role to NAMWOLF is a pro bono service that will complement Sonjui’s corporate transactions and governance practice. Congratulations Sonjui!

It’s not every day the entire KPPB LAW attorney team is in one room and one city, but last week in Atlanta, we made it happen (minus one in our group photo). We brainstormed, shared laughs, and enjoyed team exercises that helped us get to know each other beyond the legal counsel we provide for our clients. There’s something powerful about being together in person, exchanging ideas and fueling each other’s energy. We want to do this more often—it’s a game changer for how we grow as a team and shape our future—and the way we show up for our clients. With 22 years behind us, we’re more excited than ever about the journey ahead, and this amazing team is leading the way! A big thank you to our attorneys for how they show up for our clients, for each other and for helping to re-imagine how we step into the future together.
