🚨 Nail Salon Owners: Are Your 1099 Nail Technicians Actually Covered? 🚨

This is one of the most common misconceptions I see when reviewing nail salon insurance policies.

Many salon owners assume their business insurance automatically covers everyone working in the salon. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

In many situations:

✅ General Liability Insurance may cover common business accidents such as slip-and-fall incidents or property damage.

❌ If a 1099 independent contractor causes an injury while performing nail services, the salon's policy may not automatically provide Professional Liability coverage for that technician.

As a salon owner, ask yourself:

✔ Are my technicians W-2 employees or 1099 contractors?
✔ Does my policy include Professional Liability (Beauticians Liability)?
✔ Does my insurance company know how many technicians work in my salon?
✔ Are all technicians properly accounted for on the policy?

A quick insurance review today could prevent a costly coverage issue tomorrow.

MYTH: “USAA is always the cheapest option because it’s for the military.”

That’s one of the most common assumptions I hear, and it’s simply not true.

A client reached out recently thinking there was no point in shopping their insurance because they had USAA. When we actually looked at their numbers, the premium had climbed steadily over the years with no recent review. They assumed loyalty and military affiliation automatically meant the best pricing.

Here’s what most people don’t realize:
Insurance premiums are driven by rating factors: location, claims history, rebuild costs, credit tiers, and market conditions, not the name on the policy. Even great carriers can become expensive for certain profiles.

We stepped in, ran a clean comparison, and showed them how the market had shifted. Same type of protection, but with a premium that made a lot more sense for where they are today.

USAA can be a good company.
But being military-only doesn’t guarantee the best price.

The real advantage comes from reviewing your premium regularly and understanding how today’s market is actually pricing your risk, not relying on assumptions from years ago.
