The Sams Law Firm Sues DeKalb County and Two Police Officers for Shooting an Unarmed Teen Who Skipped School, had his Hands in the Air, and did Not Resist Arrest.
We take seriously the Constitution and the rights it protects. We support responsible law enforcement and our friends in blue, but we take action when the police go too far and fail to police themselves.
We have filed suit against DeKalb County and several officers based on the shooting of an unarmed 16 year-old who had his hands in the air when he was shot. He had skipped school. The officer had no idea who he was but thought he just MIGHT be a home invasion suspect. The officer, who had a K-9 unit and multiple other officers as back-up, made a number of blunders and poor choices in the situation that directly led to him shooting Marquez even though Marquez was unarmed, made no sudden or threatening moves, and did exactly what he was told to do. The shooting permanently injured Marquez's right arm and hand.
The DeKalb County Police Department found the shooting was preventable and the officer was negligent for shooting Marquez. The punishment? The officer was suspended for only 8 hours and his suspension was delayed over a month until Christmas Eve. Giving an officer Christmas Eve off work with his family for using lethal force against an unarmed boy sends a clear signal to all DeKalb County police officers, to Marquez Redden, and to the citizens of DeKalb County; the police department does not value the lives of the citizens it vows to protect.
A police officer who doesn't understand how to make an arrest or when to use his sidearm presents a danger to the entire community. This problem affects everyone in DeKalb County, not just Marquez Redden.
