You Were Named Executor. Now What? πβ
Getting a call that you've been named Executor of someone's estate can feel overwhelming β especially while you're also grieving. But knowing what to do first can make all the difference.
Your first 5 steps as a Georgia Executor:
β’ Step 1: Locate the original Will and any trust documents
β’ Step 2: Obtain certified copies of the death certificate (you'll need several)
β’ Step 3: File the Will with the Georgia Probate Court in the county where the deceased lived
β’ Step 4: Obtain Letters Testamentary β the court document that gives you legal authority to act
β’ Step 5: Open an estate bank account and begin notifying creditors and financial institutions
What comes next:
β’ Taking inventory of all assets and debts
β’ Paying valid creditor claims in the correct legal priority
β’ Filing any required tax returns
β’ Distributing assets to heirs according to the Will
Being an Executor is a legal responsibility β not just an honor. Mistakes can expose you to personal liability.
β¨ You don't have to figure this out alone.
