BRUNSWICK, GA - The family of Leonard Cure, the 53-year-old Black man shot and killed during a traffic stop by Staff Sergeant Buck Aldridge with the Camden County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) in 2023, will join nationally renowned civil rights attorneys Harry Daniels and Ben Crump as well as representatives from the Camden County NAACP tomorrow (August 8, 2025) at 12:00 PM in front of the Frank M. Scarlett Federal Building (05 Gloucester St, Brunswick, GA) to speak out following the thirteen count indictment of Aldridge on federal civil rights charges.
According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Aldridge, while working in his capacity as a Deputy Sheriff with the CCSO, used excessive force on arrestees on four separate occasions. In addition to the use of excessive force, the indictment alleges Aldridge prepared multiple misleading CCSO reports to justify his use of force.
Cure’s death sparked national outrage following the release of body camera video showing the incident as well as revelations that Aldridge, the deputy who shot Cure, was fired from a different Georgia police department in 2017 after throwing a woman to the ground during a traffic stop and handcuffing her.
Leonard Cure spent more than 16 years in prison for a 2003 robbery before being exonerated based on finding of “actual innocence,” according to the Innocence Project of Florida. Cure planned on pursuing a college degree and frequently spoke at colleges about his experience of being wrongfully convicted.
