After all these years in the legal trenches, mostly avoiding legal books, movies and TV shows, for whatever reason I decided to go back and reread some of John Grisham’s books. Turns out they hit a little differently now that I’ve spent most of my adult life practicing law and I am really enjoying them.

Some of the characters make me laugh. Some make me cringe. Some inspire me. Some frustrate the hell out of me. Some remind me why I became a lawyer. Some teach me. And some make me wonder how they ever got a law license in the first place. But they all make me think and they all entertain me.

I’ve been sharing my takeaways on my Linked In page, giving each book a one-word theme based on what stood out to me. It’s been a fun exercise digging a little deeper into these stories and seeing how they relate to the real-life practice of law.

Now I’m bringing the series over to Instagram. Next week I’ll hit book number 10, so I’m putting together a recap of the first 10 books and the lessons I took from each.

That was my favorite line from my conversation with Gino Brogdon Jr. (He/Him).

From getting trial reps as a young lawyer, to working as a personal trainer to save the money to start his own firm, to now handling more than 2,000 mediations—Gino has learned a lot about people, trust and the value of experience.

FACT OR FICTION: Personal Injury Edition ⚖️
Round 3. Five more:

🚗 You need a lawyer after every car accident.
🏥 More medical bills = a more valuable case.
🏛️ Most personal injury cases settle without a trial.
🩻 A preexisting injury means you can’t recover if you hurt the same body part again.
🤝 I care whether I like my clients.

Two clients. Two remarkably similar stories.

Clear-liability car wrecks. One even caught on video. ER treatment. Followed doctors’ recommendations. Consistent treatment.
What we sometimes call a “clean case.” Should have been a straightforward result. Yet both received pre-suit offers below their medical bills.

So we filed lawsuits.

After litigation and discovery, both cases resolved for many times those original offers and for amounts that fairly reflected their value.

The facts didn’t change after we filed suit. The cases didn’t suddenly become better. But this is the process clients have to be willing to go through and that probably doesn’t get talked about enough. It takes courage for a client to agree to file a lawsuit. Litigation is unfamiliar. Depositions can be intimidating. Court can be scary. And there are never guarantees.

These two clients were willing to go through that process rather than accept an unfair result and I’m glad for their sakes they did. And I enjoyed the cinnamon rolls!
