Deer will 100% smell you. That's not the point. Smoke covers human odor with something they run into all fall. I've done it for over 20 years. It doesn't work every time, but in the timber it beats anything on the shelf for me.

When is the best time to sell Illinois farmland? After harvest, before planting. If you have a tenant, written notice of a change has to go out about four months before the lease year ends. For most leases that lands around October 31.

A lot of times in western Illinois, hunting ground is more desirable than farm ground. It makes you scratch your head, but that's the reality. People want a place to hunt and chase big whitetails.

This ground spent 20 years in a CRP hardwood program. Now it's out. Bulldoze the oaks and farm it again, or keep it as hunting ground? Sometimes hunting ground brings more than tillable land. My son voted to leave them.

What sold this farm wasn't the photos. We asked the seller to cut trails before listing so buyers could walk it and see the potential. Gary closed this one in a few days.

Two commercial properties for sale, and the seller is open to financing. In commercial, sellers are often business owners, and some will finance the deal for the right buyer.

Nectar flow is about over. We gave the leftover comb back to the hives so they can clean it up for winter. Bees spend all year getting ready for winter. There are lessons in that.

Walk your timber this month. If a shrub is still green while the hickories turn, flip a leaf. Silver underneath is a pretty good giveaway for autumn olive. Small problems are easy to fix. Big ones choke out the next generation of oaks.
