Olivia Davidson Washington Mock Trial Club

Olivia Davidson Washington Mock Trial Club We quote each other ruthlessly. We blog about mock trial: that's how awesome we are. We learn about courtroom procedure FOR FUN. Except when we meet more often.

We find the rules of evidence invigorating. We say silly things and have fun, but we're serious about mock trial. We start meeting in October and meet twice a week. We're grateful to our parents and/or advisors for all the time, effort, and love they put into us. We're proud of our alumni!

Congratulations to team Carver on an excellent job at State (and being quarterfinalists)!

It is grueling to have two days of trials, but despite this, the team performed wonderfully, both on the first and second day. Although we don't always understand the decisions judges make, we couldn't be more proud of all of our members and the incredible work they've put into it this year. Congratulations especially to Elijah Robe on the Outstanding Witness award, and to Nick Bohuslawsky and Isabel Thomas on their outstanding Attorney awards.

A week late, but District was overall a success! Although this is the third year we’ve had to compete against one of our own teams, everyone did an amazing job and we’re so proud. Two of our three teams- ODW teams Carver and team Douglas- will be continuing on to regionals!

Congratulations to Elijah Robe, Annie Voss, and Danny Goetz on their outstanding witness awards, and Nick Bohuslawsky, Hannah Crihfield, and Isabel Thomas on their Outstanding Attorney awards!

(If anyone has more pictures, please send them in and I’ll add them!)

The 2019 Mock Trial case capsule is out! The State of Buckeye Vs Quinn Woolf.

"The 2019 case, State of Buckeye v. Quinn Woolf, challenges students to consider an individual’s right to privacy in our increasingly technological world. In September of 2018, Quinn Woolf was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and telecommunications fraud for stealing $120 million from the State of Buckeye’s pension fund. The state alleges that Quinn used a private, alpha-numeric code to hack into the state’s digital wallet and drain the funds. The state is basing its claim on drone footage captured from 400 feet in the air. The footage was enhanced to show Quinn Woolf sitting under a gazebo in the backyard of the Woolf residence with a notebook and a laptop. The enhancement revealed an alpha-numeric code written in Quinn’s notebook that matched the code needed to access the state’s account. The defense has filed a motion to exclude the drone footage, claiming that police violated Quinn’s Fourth Amendment protection against unlawful search and seizure. The motion hearing will focus on the need for a search warrant; specifically, if the contracted drone operator qualifies as a state actor and if Quinn had a reasonable expectation of privacy."

Congratulations to ODW Booker T. on advancing to State!

Although Booker and Olivia had to play each other again, you can't get rid of us that easily! Sometimes it all works out for the best. We did request to not have to play each other, even offering to go to different... well, regions, but due to complications we ended up having to play each other anyway. It was meant to be! A battle for the ages!

We're practically one big team, so it's really awkward when we have to play each other. Not to mention we already know exactly what objections are going to be made... and the closings... and the directs... and crosses... You know what, let's just hope we don't go three for three and have to do it again next year!

Congratulations to Krestian Robe and Isabel Thomas on their Outstanding Attorney awards, and to Tate Held on his Outstanding Witness award!

On to State!

Captain's log, day 35. Regionals is in two days. Spelled "Help" out of binder tabs. One of our attorneys looks a little different but we're hoping his newfound cardboard-ness won't affect anything.

The 2018 Case Capsule has been released, everyone! It is as follows:

2018 Case Capsule
Inspired by the popular podcast Serial the 2018 case asks students to tackle the post-conviction relief petition from Adam Smith. In October 1999, Smith was convicted of the murder of Hayley Leigh, his ex-girlfriend and fellow student at Trillium High. Almost 20 years later, Smith has filed a petition for a new trial, alleging ineffective assistance of counsel. Smith contends that his original attorney mishandled cell phone evidence in his case, and failed to pursue a potential alibi witness. The state has set an evidentiary hearing to consider Smith's motion for a new trial. Due to serious attorney misconduct, Smith's original trial attorney was disbarred only a few years after his case. Both sides have stipulated to the attorney's deficient representation. The hearing will focus on whether there is a reasonable probability that the outcome of the case would have been different but for the ineffective trial counsel (prejudice).

The above was taken from the OCLRE website, in particular the High School Mock Trial section. Here's a link: http://www.oclre.org/aws/OCLRE/pt/sp/programs_mocktrial

Personally, I can't wait until the case materials get released (September 20th, if you're wondering). This one looks pretty interesting to me. - Isa

Congratulations to Booker T on a job well done at State! Although we didn't move on as far as we would've liked, we are very thankful for the opportunities we've been given, and how far we progressed. The entire team did wonderfully and the "after party" in the hotel hallway was a very... Interesting ordeal (we're serious people, I swear.)

Congratulations Tate, Chloe, Krestian, Elijah, Joshua, and Isabel on a job well done! And congratulations especially to Joshua and Isabel on their outstanding witness awards.

On to prepare for next year!
