We make plans for so many parts of our pets' lives, from their daily routines to their veterinary care. But planning for their future often goes beyond the care we provide today.

If an unexpected illness, accident, or other circumstance left you unable to care for your pet, would someone know how to step in?

Who would you trust to care for them? Would that person know their routines, needs, and personality?

These are important conversations to have, and they can be part of your estate planning process.

By thinking ahead, you can help ensure the people you trust understand your wishes and have the information they need to care for your pet.

Not sure where to start? Consider who you would want to step in and have a conversation with them about what that responsibility might look like.

After all, thoughtful planning is about the relationships that matter to us, including the ones we share with our pets.

When it comes to planning for the unexpected, two important documents often get confused: a Financial Power of Attorney and an Advance Medical Directive.

While both allow you to plan ahead, they serve very different purposes.

A Financial Power of Attorney allows someone you trust to manage financial and legal matters on your behalf, within the authority you give them.

An Advance Medical Directive allows you to communicate your healthcare wishes and name someone to make medical decisions if you're unable to make them yourself.

Both documents help answer an important question: Who do you trust to speak for you when you can't?

Having these conversations and making your wishes known today can bring clarity and confidence to the people you love when they need it most.

For many of us, our pets are part of the family in every sense of the word. They’re there for the ordinary days, the difficult ones, and all the little moments in between.

But have you thought about what would happen to your pet if you were suddenly unable to care for them?

Including your pets in your estate plan can help you leave clear guidance about who you’d like to care for them and what they need to feel safe, comfortable, and loved.

Having those details in place can make a difficult transition a little easier for both your pets and the people caring for them.

We’ve been working on something new for pet parents, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned!

Some of the most meaningful planning begins long before a decision has to be made.

It begins in the conversations families have about what matters most: how we hope to be cared for, who we want beside us, and what we want the people we love to understand about our wishes.

When those conversations happen early, long-term care planning becomes more than just preparing for what might happen someday. It can become a way of caring for one another now, creating greater clarity around future choices and giving families space to make those decisions with intention.

That’s the heart of a relational approach to long-term care.

Join us tomorrow, Thursday, September 24, from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM ET for “A Relational Approach to Long-Term Care.”

Together, we’ll explore some of the choices families may encounter as care needs change, and how thoughtful planning can help bring greater clarity and peace of mind along the way.

What makes estate planning relational?

It starts with looking beyond the documents and taking time to understand the people, relationships, and priorities that matter most to you.

Relational Estate Planning® is about understanding your options, making informed decisions, and creating a plan that reflects the life you’re living and the people you care about.

Join Joshua E. Hummer, Esq., Relational Law Founding Attorney, tomorrow, Wednesday, September 23, for our next Relational Estate Planning® webinar.

Josh will explore what it means to take a more relational approach to estate planning and share practical strategies to help you plan with greater clarity and confidence. He’ll also touch on how taxes can fit into thoughtful planning and the decisions you may want to consider as you look ahead.

Whether you’re just beginning to think about your estate plan or wondering if your current plan still fits your life, we’d love to have you join us.

Your estate plan can do more than outline what happens to your assets. It can also help you pass along something just as meaningful: your values, wisdom, and hopes for the people you love.

An ethical will is a personal, non-legal document that gives you a place to share those things in your own words. For parents, that might include life lessons, family traditions, stories, beliefs, or guidance you hope your children will carry with them throughout their lives.

Legal documents can help provide clarity about your wishes. An ethical will can help your family understand the heart behind them.

Back-to-school season comes with plenty of reminders to update schedules, emergency contacts, and important information. It can also be a good time to ask whether your estate plan still reflects your family today.

For parents, that may mean revisiting who you’ve named as guardians for your children, making sure the people you trust know your wishes, and reviewing whether your documents still fit your family’s needs.

Life changes, and your estate plan should change with it.

In our latest blog, we share a few important questions parents can consider as they settle into a new school year.

As care needs change, families may find themselves navigating questions about where care will be provided, how it will be paid for, and what options are available. Having those conversations early can make it easier to approach those decisions with greater clarity and intention.

Join us for “A Relational Approach to Long-Term Care” tomorrow, Thursday, September 10, from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM ET.
