Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. We have noticed a sharp uptick in abuse and exploitation of the elderly in the last six months. It is tragic that many people's own family members treat their parents and grandparents is such heartless ways. Be on the alert for elder exploitation in your family and friends, and reach out if you have questions about how you can protect your loved ones.

Jefferson County Commissioners Lesley Dahlkemper, Andy Kerr and Tracy Kraft-Tharp proclaimed June 15 to be Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Jeffco.
Older adults deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers, and vital participating members of our communities.
Jefferson County has the largest older adult population, at 99,000, 65 years and older, in the State of Colorado and by 2035 older adults are projected to outnumber children in the United States.
Ageism and social isolation are major causes of elder abuse in the United States and at least 10% of adults 65 years and older, will experience some form of elder abuse in a given year.
Preventing abuse of older adults through maintaining and improving social supports like senior centers, human services and transportation will allow everyone to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of our communities.
