What happens if you owe the IRS money and you can't pay?
This is called being placed in "Currently Not Collectible" status, or CNC for short. It's exactly what it sounds like – the IRS agrees to stop active collection because it has determined you can't pay anything toward your tax debt without it creating a financial hardship.
To qualify, the IRS wants to see your full financial picture: your income, your necessary living expenses, and what's left over at the end of the month. If there's nothing left over – or close to it – you may be a good candidate.
Here's the part people don't expect: CNC doesn't make your debt disappear. Not only that, penalties and interest keep accruing in the background, and the IRS will periodically check back in to see if your financial situation has improved. It's better thought of as pressing pause, not hitting delete.
