We loved getting to be part of Arlington Police Department’s annual Back to School event!

Business and community leaders came together to collect school supplies and pack backpacks for local students, and our own Maria Santi was there helping fill backpacks and get them ready for distribution.

The backpacks were later handed out to children at Bob Cook Park, helping students head into the new school year with the supplies they need.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to work alongside others in our community and support Arlington families. Thank you to Arlington PD and everyone who helped make the event possible!

AP Exclusive: Trump's immigration crackdown has detained more than 50 military spouses and parents

https://apnews.com/article/military-families-immigration-trump-detained-deported-3337173bff1f06153738c217da52e846

"AP has done it’s own research by checking federal court dockets and following up with families and attorneys and is reporting 52 confirmed family members of active military members have been detained, acknowledging that it’s probably many more. AP briefly discusses how this administration’s deportation quotas are creating a situation where family of military members, normally a protected group, are now being targeted.

Military members traditionally have special benefits and protections that they have been able to access, such as Military Parole in Place, to protect their family members to make sure that those in the military are not burdened by worry and having to interrupt their military careers if their spouse or a parent, usually the caregivers in their households, are detained or deported. Immigration advocates call this undermining “military preparedness” as the active duty military may have to hire help or take leave to take care of children or elderly parents and to deal with the detained/deported family member, not to mention the emotional turmoil they are going through when they are worried about the safety of their family, even before detention and deportation.

For an administration that touts the importance of the military, especially when immigration benefits for family members is used as a recruitment enticement, is hypocritical, to say the least. The emotional and tangible consequences of this policy on our future military is far more significant than the current costs on these 52 families, which is already substantial."

Virginia regularly works with clients across a wide range of immigration matters, bringing both experience and a strong understanding of the complexities families face when immigration laws and policies change.

Legal problems rarely stay in one neat category.

A business disagreement may involve a contract and a piece of real estate. A family transition may affect an estate plan. A property purchase may uncover a title issue. A loved one’s death may lead to both probate questions and a dispute.

That is the value of working with a full-service law firm.

You do not have to know the legal name for your problem before you call. Start by telling us what happened. The team at Jackson, Landrith & Kulesz can help determine what comes next.

Myth: An expired Green Card automatically means you are no longer a lawful permanent resident.

Fact: For most permanent residents, the expiration date applies to the physical card, not automatically to the underlying immigration status. Even so, keeping your card current is important because it serves as evidence of your right to live and work in the United States. A valid card is also essential for travel.

Conditional Green Cards are different. These cards are generally valid for two years, and the conditions must be removed through the proper process before the expiration date.

Not sure which rules apply to your card? Jackson, Landrith & Kulesz can review your situation and help you understand the appropriate next step.

A question looks simple, so you answer it the best way you can.

A document seems optional, so you leave it out.

A deadline feels far away, until suddenly it is not.

Immigration matters often involve detailed forms, supporting records, strict instructions, and circumstances that are unique to each person. Small assumptions can create complications that are difficult to undo.

Before submitting something important, make sure you understand exactly what is being requested and how your answer could affect the process.

Backpacks packed. Supplies labeled. Calendars synced?

A new school year can quickly reveal problems with an existing custody or visitation schedule. Pickup permissions, extracurricular activities, transportation, holidays, and changing school hours can all create confusion when expectations are not clear.

Take time now to review the details before the calendar gets crowded.

When an existing order no longer fits your family’s circumstances, legal guidance can help you understand the available options and address concerns before they become a semester-long conflict.

A few clicks can create a document. That doesn't always create a plan.

Online estate planning platforms promise speed and convenience, but estate planning is rarely one-size-fits-all.

We've seen situations where generic documents:

Don't comply with state-specific requirements.
Leave out important provisions.
Create confusion over who has authority to act.
Fail to account for blended families, business ownership, or unique assets.
Lead to unnecessary delays, disputes, and expenses after a loved one passes away.

The people left behind are often the ones who pay the price for a plan that wasn't built around the family's actual circumstances.

Estate planning isn't about filling in blanks. It's about understanding your goals and creating documents that work together to protect them.

If you've created your estate plan online—or you're considering it—it may be worth having an experienced attorney review it before you need it.
