So incredibly touched and honored to be invited to Judge Pamela Loza’s retirement party at the Glen Club in Glenview. A lovely affair in a beautiful and fitting venue. I have known her, had cases with her before she was on the bench; and I have had the privilege of appearing in front of her in her 17+ years on the bench, including the occasions wherein she ruled against me. This is a magnificent jurist that will be sorely missed. More importantly, she’s a magnificent person.

I’m taking a moment to recognize and thank my clients, past and present, over the last 37 years, for reposing their trust and confidence in me in what was/is perhaps the most difficult journey of their lives. Along the way, we learned valuable lessons in faith. Faith, not an easy thing in difficult times.

I am also recognizing that today is Emmett Till day in Illinois. In her greatest hour of unspeakable grief, Mamie Till-Mobley made the decision to open her son’s casket to show the world what had been done to him. Possibly the most upsetting yet consequential moment in the civil rights movement.

Faith, not an easy thing in difficult times. Don’t surrender.

Tonight, the Northwest Suburban Bar Association awarded Ernie Blomquist the Lifetime Achievement Award, only bestowed twice before in the long history of the NWSBA. In June, 1989, your reporter, a freshly minted 26-year-old lawyer, walked through the front door of Massucci, Blomquist, Brown & Judson in Arlington Heights, to begin work as an associate attorney. Ernie was one of my first major influences as a young lawyer. He remains a great colleague and friend to this day. I must mention that his remarks tonight included a brave, thoughtful, unvarnished look at our current national circumstances. He declared, correctly, that our Constitution and legal system are under siege. He admonished the assembly that we have an obligation, at the most local level, including bar associations, to fight it. His words were inspired and inspiring. Ernie is so deserving of this recognition. I’m so happy I was there.

I want to wish all the Mothers a Happy Mother’s Day. In thinking about my Mother, I return to a note I received upon her passing. It came from a very thoughtful, serious and decent judge who likewise is no longer with us. “Mothers are such special people.” Right to the point.
