If you have a child in college or one heading off to college, there’s one very important document you don't want to forget: a signed Power of Attorney. Once 18 (or 19 depending on your state), a child is considered an adult for most purposes. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other privacy laws often prevent a parent or guardian from obtaining grades, receiving tuition bills or obtaining healthcare information about a child. It becomes necessary for a student to give explicit permission in a power of attorney or other school generated form to ensure a parent’s access to health, financial and educational information. This is the case, even if you are paying a portion or all of your child’s tuition.

We can assist with the creation of a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and/or a Durable Power of Attorney for Property.
