Did you know a delay in filing could cost you thousands in child support?

Here's how it works: Maryland courts can't apply a child support modification any earlier than the date you actually filed the motion, no matter when the change happened.

So let's say a parent loses their job (or gets a big raise) in June. If the motion isn't filed until November, and it's granted in February, the modification only applies back to November, not June. Those five months in between? Gone.

That's why timing matters so much. If you or your child's other parent have had a real change in circumstances, don't wait to talk to someone.

If the answer is "never" or "it's been a while," you're not alone. August is National Make-a-Will Month, so consider this your reminder to actually get it done.
