A lot of parents come to us thinking custody is a simple win-or-lose -- whoever "gets" the kids. It's not that simple, and honestly, that's a good thing.

Maryland courts look at physical custody (where the kids live day-to-day) AND legal custody (who makes the big decisions — school, medical, religion). You can share one and not the other. You can have joint legal custody but primary physical custody. There's a lot more flexibility than people expect.

If you're heading into a custody conversation, knowledge is power, and having someone in your corner who knows how Maryland courts think makes all the difference.

In Maryland, depending on the circumstances, a spouse may be able to request temporary spousal support while the divorce is still pending. This can be especially important when one spouse earns significantly more than the other or when one spouse needs financial assistance to meet their reasonable expenses during the separation and divorce process.

It’s important to understand that temporary support is not necessarily the same as long-term or indefinite alimony. The court may consider different factors when determining what support is appropriate and for how long.

That’s why timing matters. If you believe you may need financial support during your divorce, don’t wait until the case is almost over to bring it up with your attorney.
