What actually happens if you die without a will in Maryland?
Short answer: the state decides for you.
Without a will, Maryland's intestacy laws determine who inherits your assets — and it's not always who you'd expect. Spouses, children, and other relatives may end up splitting things in ways you never intended.
It can also mean a longer, more complicated probate process for the people you leave behind — at the worst possible time.
The good news? This is completely avoidable.
