Our next summer spotlight is Sara Shoemaker! This summer, Sara has been volunteering for a State representative campaign. In addition to this awesome experience, Sara is also taking a constitutional law class. When she isn't working, Sara has been cooking up a new recipe almost every day. She hopes to have perfected her pasta making skills by the time she's back with the team this upcoming semester!
Our members of Michigan Mock Trial hope everyone is staying healthy and enjoying their summer! As we near the end of July, it’s time to showcase some of the amazing opportunities our members have been taking advantage of this summer. There is no doubt that the current pandemic has caused a lot of changes throughout the past few months. However, the members of MMT have been adapting with remote internships and seeking out ways to help their community.
Without further ado, let’s meet our first Summer Spotlight: Grace Roberts
Grace Roberts, a rising junior and one of our newest Tournament Directors has had the amazing chance to intern at a District Attorney’s office this summer. In addition, she’s been getting ahead with some credits by taking a Calculus class. The pandemic has given Grace an opportunity to spend time with family and her cats in Maine. Fun fact is that she’s also been working at Starbucks! A silver lining to the pandemic is that she notices a lot of customers are more grateful and appreciative, which brightens her day. Most of all, she can’t wait to get back to Ann Arbor and the rest of her team!
Please join us in saying congratulations and happy graduation to our seniors! 🎉
Annalise Brinks, Ian Harris, Ali Birge, Liv Hauserman, Cory Zayance, Bianca Blanshine, and Pranav Govindaraju: We are so sorry that the year didn't end with the ceremony you deserved. Know that our team is forever grateful for everything you've done and all that you've taught us. We can't wait to watch each and every one of you flourish in your careers, and will always be rooting for you. 💙
L/P, Michigan Mock Trial
We are so happy to announce that Michigan has received a bid to Nationals! 🎉
Amongst that, this team was awarded with the Spirit of AMTA Award, an all-nation attorney award for Andrew Beaudoin, an all-nation witness award for Annalise Brinks, and another all-nation witness award for Alex Shoflick.
Please join us in congratulating this hard-working and dedicated team for a job well done, and wish them luck as they venture to Nationals in April! As always, GO BLUE! 💙
Michigan Mock Trial's C Team has officially finished their mock trial season! This past weekend, our C Team traveled out to Columbus, Ohio to compete in their Regional Tournament. While at the competition, freshman Priyanka John earned an Outstanding Attorney Award with a near perfect score! We are so proud of what this team has accomplished, and congratulate them on such an amazing season! 💙
Michigan Mock Trial has officially earned two bids to the Opening Round Championships in Geneva, IL!
This weekend, Michigan A and B went to Evanston, IL to compete at the AMTA Regional Tournament. Michigan B earned second place at the competition, with a record of 7 wins. Michigan A walked away undefeated, with 8 wins, making them Regional Champions! Our team was also highlighted with several outstanding individual awards going to Cory Zayance, Olivia Hauserman, Ian Harris, and Alex Shoflick! 🎉
We are so proud of these teams, and can not wait to see what success Michigan C has at their Regional Tournament in a few weeks.
As always, Go Blue! 〽️💙
New year, new team photo!
MMT had another rewarding weekend! Two teams traveled to Bloomington, Indiana for the Hoosier Hoedown, and another team ventured to Chicago for the Great Chicago Fire Invitational! 😁 Many teammates earned individual awards including: Jacob Paton, Grace Roberts, Ian Harris, Olivia Hauserman, Cory Zayance, and Bianca Blanshine! 🥳 We're excited to keep competing and improving this semester!
This past weekend, Michigan's B Team traveled to Brooklyn, New York to compete in the CUBAIT Invitational! Hosted in the Brooklyn Law School, the team spent their days competing with scenic city views and their evenings taking the subway, touring Manhattan, and eating some delicious Shake Shack! 😋
This weekend Team Newton’s Laws of Motion travelled all the way to New Haven, Connecticut to compete in the Yale Invitational. The Yale Invitational is well-known as the LARGEST tournament of the year, with 52 distinguished teams going head-to-head. After a tough weekend, MMT finished in 8th place with an individual attorney award going to Bianca Blanshine!
We are so pleased to end our invitational season on such a high note, and as always, Go Blue 〽️
We want to thank every single person who donated to Michigan Mock Trial, or who even shared our posts on #GivingBlueday. Our team would not be possible without your help, and we are beyond grateful for you all! 💙〽️
Michigan Mock Trial does a lot more than just compete. According to our teammates:
“I met my best friends and found my community on campus because of MMT” - Attorney Ian Harris
“I get to travel the nation” ... “in the past year I’ve been to New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C., and so many other cities.” - Attorney Johanne Vincent
“Mock trial helped me realize that I want to go to law school after I graduate” - Witness Annalise Brinks
All of this would NOT be possible without donations. On this #givingblueday we ask that you consider donating to Michigan Mock Trial to help our team continue doing what we love.
But, if none of that is convincing, think about this: “If you donate I will make you free homemade cookies” - Attorney Grace Roberts
Michigan Mock Trial has consistently been ranked as one of the best student-run mock trial teams in the NATION. But in order to be the best, we need help from the best. On this Giving Blueday, we ask that you consider donating any amount you can to our team. Your gift helps us travel across the nation, pay for competition materials, host our very own tournament in Ann Arbor, and so much more.
Our success wouldn’t be possible without your help, so please consider donating at:
University of Michigan Mock Trial had a wonderful weekend! We sent two teams out to two separate tournaments. First, Team Alvin and the Chipmunks competed at the Colonel Classic in Lexington, Kentucky! This team had an impressive record of 7-1, ultimately taking 2nd place. We also sent a team to Washington D.C., to compete in the Great American Mock Trial Invitational. Here, Team Powerpuff Girls took 2nd place as well! Amongst these accolades, we had several attorneys and witnesses honored with individual awards! We are so proud of these two teams for closing off their invitational season on such a high note. As always, Go Blue! 〽️
Michigan Mock Trial had another fantastic weekend! 🎉
One of our teams ventured to Philadelphia to compete in the Black Squirrel Invitational, walking away with a 4th place finish and multiple individual awards!
Our other two teams drove down to Urbana-Champaign to compete in the Illini Invitational. These teams finished in 4th and 2nd place, earning two individual awards in the process!
Thank you to the gracious teams we hit this weekend- and as always, Go Blue! 〽️
Michigan Mock Trial has had a fantastic start to our invitational season!
Team Leslie kicked off our year by traveling to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Scarlet and Gray Invitational. Just one week later, Team Rue and Team Piggy ventured down to Cleveland, Ohio to compete in the Spartan Throwdown. Several of our teammates were honored with individual awards. As if that wasn't enough, Team Piggy earned a fourth place trophy, and Team Rue was crowned TOURNAMENT CHAMPION!
We are thrilled to start the season on such a high note - and know it can only go up from here. As always, GO BLUE! 〽️
After potentially one of our most competitive recruiting seasons (over ONE HUNDRED tryouts), we are excited to announce that we have selected 9 amazing individuals to become a part of our 2019-2020 team.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our mass meetings, who auditioned for our team, and who showed interest in becoming a part of Michigan Mock Trial.
We can not wait to begin this season, and as always, Go Blue. 〽️
With the first week of school coming to a close, we are beyond excited to begin our 2019-2020 mock trial season!
This year, we will be holding two mass meetings (see below), and we invite any and all interested in our team to join us at a mass meeting. Please note, you MUST attend one of these events to try out.
We can not wait to see YOU at our mass meetings, and as always Go Blue! 〽️
We’ve had a wonderful eight weeks showcasing some of our talented teammates. For our last summer spotlight of 2019, we’d like to introduce you to Sara Shoemaker.
Sara has been working at the Public Defenders office for Washtenaw County since May. Washtenaw County is one of 9 counties in Michigan that has a formal Public Defender’s Office. She is working for a Juvenile attorney handling Neglect and Abuse cases. In the office, Sara assists in scheduling home visits, goes to court for review hearings, and drafts court documents for review. Juvenile law is an area she did not know much about previously but she is discovering new things every day.
We’re always so proud of our teammates, past and present, and are beyond excited to meet our newest members this fall. Make sure to like our page to stay updated on this year’s mass meetings, tryouts, and more. Go Blue!
For this week’s Summer Spotlight, meet Henry Newman!
Henry is a rising junior studying both History and Economics, and this summer he’s been working at Lockehouse Retail Group in Walnut Creek, California. At Lockehouse, Henry has had the opportunity to intern in commercial real estate. This means he has been able to assist brokers with leasing reports, touring sites, escrow timelines, and, best of all, office putt putt golf.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Henry! 〽️
For this week's Summer Spotlight, we are going to showcase our lovely teammate Victoria:
Sophomore Victoria Shahnazary, studying Political Science, is spending her summer as a Government Affairs Intern in the Organization for International Investment in Washington, D.C. As an intern, Victoria works to edit and write policy letters to members of Congress, draft memos to member-companies, monitor Congressional hearings, prepare briefings for roundtables, and in general, help the organization with their efforts in lobbying for free trade and tax reform.
(Not mentioned by her, and probably unrelated to her actual job: she met JOHN STAMOS!!)
Sounds like an amazing opportunity Victoria, we're so proud of you!! 💙
We're so excited to introduce you to our fourth summer spotlight (and our first STEM related one), Morgan!
This summer, junior Morgan Saladino has had the wonderful opportunity to coordinate with a science-based organization called Bricks 4 Kidz.
Alongside Bricks 4 Kidz, Morgan has been running science camps that teach young children basic mechanical engineering concepts and abilities. This camp also works to facilitate basic programming/robotics skills by using fun activities and motorized machines made from Legos!
Thank you, Morgan, for sharing your STEM-filled summer experiences with us (and shoutout to your lovely volunteer assistants who posed for a photo)! 😉
For our next Summer Spotlight, we'd love to showcase one of our fantastic seniors!:
This summer, rising senior Michael Fox, who is a Political Science major, is working at JPMorgan Chase in the Office of Legal Obligations as a Corporate Analyst. Currently, he is taking part in the summer internship portion of the Corporate Analyst Development Program, which is a rotational program within the Corporate Bank that offers roles in Process Improvement, Project Management, and Data Analytics.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Michael, and we can't wait to hear more about it when we're all back together in Ann Arbor! 🤩
New Website!! Woot woot!
We have some fiercely intelligent teammates, and we'd love to show you the fantastic things they are working on this summer!
THIS WEEK'S SUMMER SPOTLIGHT:
Junior Cydney Gardner-Brown, Public Policy, is spending her summer as a congressional intern working in Representative Brenda Lawrence’s office (MI-14). During this internship, Cydney attended a press conference held by Speaker Nancy Pelosi regarding The Dream and Promise Act just moments before the House voted for it on the floor. Cydney also had the amazing opportunity to witness a forum, broadcasted live on CSPAN, on Black Youth Suicide with award winning actor and mental health advocate, Taraji P Henson, who was speaking on behalf of her foundation, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation.
We are so proud of the work you’re doing Cydney!
We have some undoubtably intelligent teammates, and we'd love to show you the fantastic things they are accomplishing this summer. Weekly, we'll be highlighting the amazing endeavors of a teammate, because everyone deserves to see how great our team is.
This summer, Sophomore Jacob Paton has had the opportunity to spend his time interning at a small business in Ann Arbor called DocNetwork. At DocNetwork, Jacob works to help propel the already rapidly growing business by researching potential growth opportunities and, in Jacob's words, "making big business moves.” He hopes his experience this summer will help vault him into a career in investment banking.
Keep crushing it out there, Jacob! 〽️💙
This past weekend teams 1224 and 1225 attended the Great Chicago Fire Invitational and came away with a combined 3rd place as a team. Our program also was the recipient of the coveted Spirit of AMTA award, given out to the team with the best sportsmanship as voted on by their competitors. Michigan A had a final record of 7-1 while B Team took home a respectable 4-4. In what was a first in recent memory, all three of our beloved program captains won Outstanding Attorney awards. We also had Victoria Shahnazary winning an Outstanding Witness award with her amazing rendition of a Russian ex-patriot and Cory Zayance getting witness awards on two different sides of the case because you can't get awards on three.
As Thanksgiving draws to a close and The Game approaches, we at Michigan Mock Trial would like to take a quick look back at all the things we've been thankful for in the month of November.
Beginning on November 8th in Champaign, Illinois, Team Captain Charlotte Gemma led an all star squad of wolverines on an 8-0 rampage that ended in a second place finish. Gemma herself netted 40 ranks on both sides of the case, which is decent.
That same weekend Captains Pranav Govindaraju and Bianca Blanshine assembled two strong teams of their own and went toe to toe with some of the best programs in the nation at the Haverford Black Squirrel Invivational. Pranav made a name for himself and sent opposing attorneys running in fear and left opposing witnesses soiling their pants as he amassed 19 ranks on the defense, the highest of any attorney competing at the entire tournament.
A week later we hosted the 4th annual Wolverine Classic in Ann Arbor, a monumental amount of work that was carried out mostly by our amazing tournament directors: Sara Shoemaker and Jojo George. Congratulations to the Univerity of Chicago for taking a well deserved first place.
We now turn our attention to December and to the future, which begins with Giving BlueDay on Tueday November 17th. Any donations of more than $50 to Michigan Mock Trial will be matched by the University of Michigan (for student donations they will match anything over $25). Come out and support your favorite fake lawyers!
Michigan Mock Trial is a competitive team that travels across the country to compete against other universities in simulated trials. The Michigan Mock Trial team is currently ranked 5th in the nation and is the only fully student run program in the top 20.
3rd Mason Ann Arbor, MI 48103

Dear Michigan Mock Trial Team: As one of your alums, I am requesting that you consider helping at this year's High School Mock Trial Tournament in Ann Arbor on February 23rd. We have a very heavy field of teams competing this year and need as much assistance as we can get. You are welcome to volunteer as scoring judges for the event as you are likely more qualified to judge than most!
Sincerely, James Liggins (MCCE Tournament Coordinator)

Hi everyone! Mckinsey and Co is holding their full time info session this evening from 6:30-8:30 in the Pendleton room in the Union.
All are welcome - I will attend in person (but also be making an appearance at Ricks)
Last year, the witnesses of the case were college-educated professionals, brilliant CEOs, and clever intellectuals. This year... well, most witnesses belong to a portion of society that Frank Reynolds once perfectly described as "the trash."
Let the year of the character witness begin!
